Hi everyone, My Courtney ancestors come from the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England. My earliest known ancestor was Robert COURTNEY, born about 1724, (birthplace unknown). He married Elisabeth CORKE on June 2nd, 1754 in Northwood, Cowes, Isle of Wight. Neither Robert or Elisabeth's birth can be traced (there is unfortunately a gap in the records for the early 1700s. There was a Corke family in West Cowes in the late 18th and also the 19th century in West Cowes; although I can make no definite connection. Robert and Elizabeth had ten known children. 1. Robert, baptised January 30th, 1757 in Northwood, Cowes. I believe married Sarah HOLLIS on June 21st, 1784 in Northwood. 2. William, baptised May 5th, 1760, Northwood. 3. Benjamin, baptised December 20th, 1761, Cowes, died February 7th, 1835, Cowes. 4. Dinah, baptised June 8th, 1764. I believe married Robert Finch, May 1st, 1781, Northwood. 5. Mary, baptised February 3rd, 1766, Cowes. I believe married John Pinhorn, October 22nd, 1789 in Northwood. 6. Edward, baptised June 5th, 1768, Cowes. I believe married Mary Matthews on February 23rd 1789 in Northwood. Buried August 22nd, 1809 in Cowes. 7. Samuel, baptised April 16th, 1770 in Cowes. 8. Elizabeth, baptised June 8th, 1772, in Cowes 9. John, baptised March 20th, 1774, in Cowes 10. Ann, baptised 22nd March, 1776. Married December 26th, 1791 to Stephen GOLD in Cowes. Ann and Stephen are my direct ancestors. Stephen died in 1804 and their son William Bennett GOLD moved to Portsmouth. He later became a Coastguard and via Sussex and South Ireland he finally settled in Seahouses, North Sunderland, Northumberland, England and died there in the 1870s.
