Descendants of Thomas Courtney First Generation 1. Thomas Courtney was born about 1814 in , , Maryland. The 1860 Andrew County, Missouri federal census for Rochester township indicates Thomas is a farmer with no real estate and personal property valued at $300. His wife Amanda is also listed. Intrestingly, the household immediately prior to Thomas is also a Courtney family. Household #556 is headed by Harriet Courtney, 68, born in Maryland. Also listed is Edward Courtney, 33, born in Maryland, farmer with real estate valued at $2200 and personal property at $125. William Courtney, 26, born in Maryland, farmer with real property valued at $250. Henson Courtney, 22, farmer with personal property valued at $140, born in Maryland. Charles Courtney, 17, farmer, born somewhere other than Maryland or Missouri (looks like Oa.) The 1870 Andrew County, Missouri federal census for Rochester township, Whiteville Post Office, indicated Thomas Courtney had $4000 in real estate and $2350 in personal property. There was no occupation listed for him. The 1880 Andrew County, Missouri federal census for Monroe Township indicated Thomas' occupation as farmer. It also indicated that both of his parents were also born in Maryland. I checked the 1850 Missouri census index and there are no Courtneys in Andrew County. I also checked the 1850 Maryland census index and there is only one Courtney listed and it is not the father of Thomas. Thomas married Amanda B.. Amanda was born about 1816 in , , Kentucky. The 1880 census indicated both her parents were born in Virginia. Thomas and Amanda had the following children: 2 M i. George D. Courtney was born about 1861 in , , Missouri. + 3 M ii. Alonzo Price Courtney was born Jan 1863. 4 F iii. Mary Ann Courtney was born about 1865 in , , Missouri. The 1870 census indicated her name as Mollie. 5 F iv. Ella A. Courtney was born about 1866 in , , Missouri. 6 M v. Charles F. Courtney was born about Dec 1869 in , , Missouri. 7 F vi. Sedelia Courtney was born about 1873 in , , Missouri. Second Generation 3. Alonzo Price Courtney (Thomas) was born Jan 1863 in Missouri. Alonzo Price Courtney is documented in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Oklahoma federal censuses. From these records we find considerable information. His father was born in Maryland and his mother was born in Kentucky. Emma's father was born in Kentucky and her mother was born in Missouri. Alonzo apparently married Emma Ellis in Missouri about 1886 and had his first two children there. Based on the ages of Lottie and Mamie, the family moved to Olkahoma between Jan 1889 and Jan 1891. Alonzo's occupation is listed as a farmer. At the time of their arrival the Oklahoma Territory occupied less than half of the present state with the remainder as Indian Territory. Canadian County had just been formed from Seminoles and Creeks lands. In all three censuses the family was in Canadian County which is just west of Oklahoma City. In 1900 they were in the township of Mathewson, still in the Oklahoma Territory. Statehood occurred in 1907. Alonzo married Emma Catherine Ellis, daughter of Founten Ellis and Darcus, about 1886 in probably, Missouri. Emma was born May 1868 in Missouri. They had the following children: 8 F i. Sina Courtney was born Jan 1887 in Missouri. She died before 1980. 9 F ii. Lottie Courtney was born Jan 1889 in Missouri. She died before 1980. 10 F iii. Mamie Courtney was born Jan 1891 in Oklahoma. She died before 1980. 11 F iv. Dorcus Courtney was born 10 Nov 1893 in Piedmont, Oklahoma. She died 18 Feb 1980 in Fort Worth, Tarrent, Texas and was buried in probably, Elk City, Ok. The 1920 federal census indicates both her parents were born in Missouri. In 1995 the Martin Funeral Home in Elk City provided me an information sheet on Dorcus Young containing the following: Date of death: 2 18 80 8:30 PM, Age 86-3-8. (This is my grandmother - I will omit the lengthy notes for her and her husband.) Dorcus married Roy Barton Young, son of John Archie Young and Mollie Jane McCanless, on 19 Apr 1909 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Roy was born 19 Jun 1890 in Royse City, Rockwall, Texas. He died 29 Jan 1961 in Elk City, Beckham, Oklahoma. 12 M v. Green (or Goren) Courtney was born Mar 1896 in Oklahoma. He died before 1980. His name in the 1900 census appeared to be Goren. It was clearly Green in the 1910 census. 13 F vi. Amanda Courtney was born Feb 1898 in Oklahoma. She died before 1980. 14 M vii. Price Courtney was born about 1901 in Oklahoma. He died after 1980. 15 M viii. Chester Courtney was born about 1905 in Oklahoma. He died after 1980. 16 F ix. Emma Courtney was born about 1910 in Oklahoma. She died before 1980. 17 F x. Naomi Courtney was born about 1917 in Oklahoma. She died before 1980. --------------------------------------------------------------------- I would appreciate any information on the ancestors of this line, especially in Maryland.
