    1. Rev. Philip Courtney, Richmond VA
    2. Greetings to All: My ggg-gfa was the Rev. Philip Courtney, Methodist clergyman, b. 1780 in VA, d. 1865 in Richmond VA. Between 1816 and 1865, he performed 1,647 marriages in Henrico, New Kent, Hanover, and Charles City counties in VA. He was a founder of the Lancasterian School in Richmond VA where he taught and served as principal. According to the brief biography I found in the S. Bassett French Biographical Sketches, p. 674, from the Library of Virginia, he was "called the father of Methodism in the Capital of the State." Philip Courtney's daughter, Caroline (my gg-gmo), b. abt 1810 in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, m. John B. Allen on 25 Feb 1825 in Henrico Co. Strangely, Philip Courtney did not perform this marriage but he did preside at the marriage of his grandson, Richard Bohannon Allen to Frances Emma Holmes on 17 Oct 1859 in Richmond VA. When Philip Courtney died, at the age of 85, he was survived by his second wife, Susan R. Courtney who was 40 years younger than he, and daughters Louisa B. Courtney, 16 yrs old, and Mary A. Courtney, 13 yrs old. What a guy!! Who were Philip Courtney's parents? Siblings? His first wife, mother of Caroline? And the other female and two males, all under 10, listed in the 1810 census? Hoping someone out there has a connection to my Richmond, Henrico Co, VA Courtneys?? Happy hunting, Joane Janega
