    1. Robert Brown Courtney, Samuel, & James
    2. I am really glad that a list has been started for the Courtney name. I have a brick wall after my great-grandparents Robert Brown Courtney and Susannah Ball. He must have know I would be searching for him, every single census he gave a different birthplace for his father. On the 1860 West Point, Lee Co., Iowa census he was 24 and his wife was 18. They lived next door to a Hugh Courtney 59 b. in NC and his wife, Nancy 55 b. in OH. Robert always said he and his wife were both born in Indiana and his mother in OHIO. The only census that said his father was born in NC was in 1880. I also think his mother's maiden name may have been Brown since that was his middle name, but it might have been after another relative. This is what I have: MATERNAL COURTNEY, Robert Brown b. 17 Aug 1833 somewhere in Indiana. Robert m. Mary Susanna BALL 2 Sep 1858 (I don't know where). They lived in Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. They were listed in the 1860 West Point, Lee Co., IOWA. census, the 1880 Hutchinson, McPherson Co., KS. census, the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS. (on different census it showed his father born in NC, OH., and KY.). They had ten children: David Henry-1860, Samuel (my grandfather)-1861, Florence Estella-1863, Aaron-1866, Mary Inez-1868, Alva J.-1870, Nathan-1873, Daniel-1876, William-1879, Albert-1883. Both Robert and Mary Susannah died two months apart in 1926 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS. COURTNEY, Samuel (my grandfather) was b. 29 Jan 1861 in Lee Co., IA. (one census shows IL.). He m. first Luella "Ella" Dressler 11 Sep 1885 (where?). They had eight children: Jessie 1887, Alta 1889, Hazel Leona 1891, Greta 1896, Dewey 1898, Glenn 1902, Naomi Marcia 1904 (my mother), Paul 1908. Glenn and Paul d. as infants (Dewey was the only son who lived to adulthood, but had no children), Luella d. 24 Jul 1908. Samuel m. 2nd Esther Henderson in 1916. Samuel d. 1935 in Ottawa, Franklin Co., KS. Known places where they lived IA., IL?, Council Grove, Ottawa, and Topeka, KS. PATERNAL COURTNEY, James Byrnes/Burns, not sure where and when he was born, parents, siblings? Married Mattie Laws 29 Nov 1912. Mattie was my paternal grandmother's niece. They had four children: Helen Virginia 1913, James Josephus 1915, Roy Irvin 1917, and Jack Burns/Byrnes 1920. James Byrnes/Burns Courtney died 12 Dec 1919. Have Courtneys on maternal and paternal side of family--are they related?? Mattie was from Kansas. Any information appreciated, will be happy to share. JSuman @aol.com.
