Jill, I, too, have COTTERS. Mine came from Ireland and went to Ontario, Canada about 1850. The names I have for the males are Charles, Richard, and William--also Timothy. Any connection? Jean
Hi Jean My Cotters originated from Brosna Co Kerry, just over the Cork County Border. My great grandfather, William Cotter (b1849) moved to Glanworth County Cork to teach in the local National School (primary school). He went on to become the headmaster in the school and raised his family there. The names Charles and Richard do not appear to be family names for us. My Cotter family were Catholic and those sound like they may be Protestant names. There certainly were some well off Cotter families in Cork that were not related to us. I do know some family went to America and my grandfather Nicholas Joseph Cotter (1885-1975) certainly corresponded regularily with family in Chicago but unfortunately I took little interest in that as I was still young and in school at that time.
