    3. Hi there, I was wondering if anyone out there can help. I am researching a LYONS family who are believed to have come to the UK from County Cork. We do not know the year they came to the UK. The person we are trying to track down is a JOHN JOSEPH LYONS, he was born approx 1902/3 when he married in 1926 his occupation was a Pipe Layer. His father was JOHN LYONS a cab driver. JOHN JOSEPH LYONS married EVELYN MAY DAY and died in 1966. I'm afraid this is all the info. we have to go on. I was wondering if maybe the family were in the 1901 or 1911 census or if anyone has access to the birth indexes could take a look. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it just to point me in the right direction. Many thanks. Anne.

    3. Hi Anne, I also spent many years trying to track down the movements of an Uncle of mine - John Lyons - who was born in County Cork and immigrated to USA in 1895. I had no success until I discovered that it was common for people with the name "Lehane" to change their names to "Lyons" on immigration. In fact I think it was more common than otherwise! I suggest you check the Ellis Is. site for both these names - was John Joseph born in USA and his father in Ireland? If so suggest you check the Ellis Is site for the arrival of the father under both names. Also check FHL records for births of John LEHANE in Co. Cork but I warn you it is a very common name especially in the N.W. of the county. My own Uncle, John J Lehane [Lyons] was born in Ballyvourney. Co. Cork and it seems to be the main area of the name Lehane/Lyons. Sorry I cannot give you any more help and wish you all good luck.
