Around the time of the Civil War in America, the British government was on the alert for potential troublemakers arriving from abroad, particularly adherents to the Fenian cause whose aim was rebellion in Ireland. For a period of time they recorded information on passengers arrivals in Irish and English ports. I'm not sure if it was all passengers, or just males, or just males of Irish origin. Eneclann has compiled these passenger lists into a searchable CDROM. I'm not sure where the originals are, probably at the British national archives at Kew. While this database would not help you if they went back to Ireland in 1871, your question prompted me to let other list readers know about this database.
