    3. Sue Thanks again. It would not surprise me to see that Daniel J. Heffernan is the one from Kilkenny, but if I had a choice, I would want my my grandmother Anastasia Butler to be the one from Kilkenny...who knows, she could be an unknown descendant of the Butlers of Kilkenny Castle. :) (Actually she is from Ballyknockane, Thurles in Tipperary). Your advise is priceless, however disappointing. I was looking for an excuse to revisit Cork City... If your family is anything like mine, they aren't actually accurate to their birth days or years. Most of mine were off by three years. You might want to check the indexes around it. Also, there is an IGI listing for a Daniel Heffernan, born 13 July 1875 in Kilkenny, whose parents are listed as Martin and Honora Geagle. There is a method to the actual films. I would suggest you do a Rootsweb search on the IRL-Galway list for a 9 Feb 2007 post by Cathy O'Neill titled Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Irish BMDs - FILMED Indexes. That is the best explanation of the breakout of the index volumes. Now, one warning, it is usually best in Irish research to find everything about the person and their family in the country they immigrated to before trying to do research in the Irish records. You might want to post to the Boston or Suffolk County, Massachusetts lists for more information about the family. A number of folks on those two lists have access to the NEHGS Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910, that can help fill out your family. You might even find some other Heffernans doing research. There are on-line Boston City Directories that can help also. This URL http://dca.tufts.edu/features/bostonstreets/people/directories.html has some that covers your time frame. If you haven't tried to find Daniel Heffernan in the Boston Passengers lists, someone on two lists or GenMassachusetts list will probably help. Another area to check are the naturalization papers? Do any of the censuses indicate if and when Daniel naturalized? Sometimes more than "Ireland" was recorded. Finally, you might want to get the Catholic Church marriage records from the Archivist, Archdiocese of Boston http://www.rcab.org/Archives/historical_resources.html . A small percentage of the time, the priest actually recorded the townland the bride and groom were baptized in. The church record might give the county, but also can just say Ireland. At least you will get the witnesses, which are often family. Best of luck with your search.
