    3. Australia did not become a Commonwealth until 1901. Records of immigration before that ( and possibly later) are held by the various States. The first state was New South Wales - check out the indexes on www.records.nsw.gov.au. For other states just try 'google' for archives or immigration etc and the state - eg Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania aka Van Diemans Land. By state archives, do you mean Australian archives? I have not quite figured out administrative divisions in Ireland and I know nothing about Australia. I did get some index information forwarded to me about Australian passenger lists, with a woman named Norris listed on one. I am not quite sure what to do with that. If these records are by state, does a person have to look state by state? I guess I would like to know more. Thanks.
