I like reading all the information pulled from County Cork. However, my husband's Murphy and Fitzgerald lines come from South County Cork. His gggrandparents were married in St Peters and Paul but their first born daughter was baptized in another church. After that they immigrated to America. Are there records online for South County Cork or do I just start writing each Catholic church I can find? A gentle shove in the right direction would certainly help. The Baptism would have ocurred around 1849. I appreciate any help. Happy New Year. Molly Hi Molly: Please don't write to every Parish Priest in County Cork asking them to spend hours looking up information for you, especially a name so common as Murphy. Parish Priests have better things to do than spend their days on wild goose chases for people who don't know which parish their relations come from. When I was doing my research in various parishes in Cork in the late 90's, several Priests would mention all the letters they received from "Yanks" asking them to go through their records in search of ancestors "just in case they came from their parish." They responded to none of them unless there was some grease ($$$$$) in the envelope. Money still talks. I made it a point to not only do my own research once given access to the books at the parish, but to leave a nice donation with the Parish Priest upon my departure. I know for a fact that few local researchers do that from comments made by more than one Parish Priest. I have some Murphy and Fitzgerald info I will send you directly. It is available on the Rootsweb web site, which would be a good place for you to do some research. Merry Christmas. Dan Murphy: Boston, MA

    3. Dan - this is excellent advice.  It's really up to us to find out what we can about where our ancestors lived - townland and/or parish. I have been doing research on families from southwest County Cork for a number of years - have been making an annual trip to Dublin to the National Library.  The area in southwest County Cork is around Skibbereen and Baltimore. On the following website, there is birth, marriage and death information for 30 surnames from this area only:        www.igp-web.com/IGPAchives Go to Cork then to Church records then to Information on various surnames The surnames are in alphabetical order, so you'll need to scan thru the 136 page document to find the surnames you're interested in.
