Hello, Donna -- Have you located the James Welch family in the 1850 (or 1860) U.S. Census for New Hampshire? That could provide some useful background information. Were James or Mary still living in 1900? Enumerators in that U.S. Census asked for the year that a person immigrated to the U.S. That information could also be helpful in more narrowly focusing your search. I don't believe that New Hampshire conducted state censuses but neighboring Massachusetts did so in 1855 and 1865 and there might also be useful clues there if the family had moved across the state line.
