Hello List: This is my first posting. I'm interested in the North Cork area, the Mallow and Fermoy areas in particular. Many folks left that part of County Cork in the 1820's to come to the region around Ottawa,Canada, either via assisted emigration or to work on the canals here. I'm especially interested in tenants on the large estates belonging to Lords Kingston, Ennismore, Doneraile, etc.and the conditions in Ireland in the 1820's which caused so many people to leave. There are lists of the "Peter Robinson Settlers in 1823" who came here on my website - including many of the common surnames from North Cork (and nearby parts of Tipperary, Limerick and Waterford). Among the many SULLIVAN and BURNS ancestors which I am researching, I'm also searching for the origins of less common names: STACKPOLE from Glanworth and CHRISTOPHER from North Cork and Waterford. I have a search engine for surnames at http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/history.htm and my north Cork material (gathering stuff for a trip there next year) is at http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/dream.htm ...
