I also thought about sending a similar reply to Maura's message and will do so now. First of all I thought this list was meant as a source of information for anyone with a query relating to their research, regardless of whether the list owner thought it "necessary" or not. Am I perhaps mistaken in this belief? During my many years of researching my Irish Ancstors, and I am a very serious researcher, I have resorted to buying various "baby-name" books but have found them lacking in information relating to the many Irish "nicknames". For instance, my name is Margaret, but because my father was an Irishman I naturally am called Peggy. I have never yet found this Irishism mentioned in any book. It seems to me that once a baby was Baptised in Ireland and given a name it was taken for granted that the child would be known by anything other than it's proper name.
