Colin, Thank you for your help. The Regimental information you supplied was a partial match with that on a remaining section of an old paybook of John SHIELDS. However, the paybook exerpt ends in 1875 with his marriage in Chichester. As the next time we have evidence of his location is Mallow, is it possible there was an army presence there after 1880? I wonder how early servicemen retired in those days.... Eileen
