Hi, I am new to Cork listers and I wonder if anyone can please help me a bit further into the county with any tree including Stephen CRONIN, born ca.1831. I traced him in the 1901 Census in Ummeraboy West townland, Millstreet, with wife Hanora but can't get back from there. According to my present relatives the whole family were in the same townland in 1886-8 but I am hitting the wall getting any positive evidence. The family name is also mentioned in the townland in Griffiths Valuation 1852 but the first names don't connect true. Can anyone offer a Stephen ? Thanks in advance, Terry

Terry What you need are the cancelled valuation books, these are in more or less the same format as Griffiths and cover the period c1855-1950ish. In addition to the columns found in Griffiths there is an 'observations' column which records the date of any changes (such as ownership), for example when the name of the tenant changes the old name is crossed out, the new written in, and the date recorded under 'observations', to avoid confusion different colour ink was used for each event, unfortunately most of us have access only to black and white microfilm copies. When the book for that area had too many notations to be readable then a new book was started, typically most areas would have about 8-10 books covering about 90+ years. These records are available from the LDS. Ummeraboy West is in the district electoral division of Doonasleen and as far as I can make out the film number is 830558.
