In 1850 -thirty years before- it took my Vickery family 6 weeks to make the crossing from Ireland -- but they came by sailing ship and the destination was New Orleans rather than New York. One would guess the crossing took much longer than had been anticipated, because they had to ration water and the family had to further stretch their supply to bathe the baby when a pregnant daughter gave birth en route !
