    2. Jan SKS can correct me but it was probably the Fenians around that time (1860's). Maurice FitzGerald (William's father) ran a "safe house" for the Fenians on the run in Garryarthur, Limerick in the 1860s. The Black and Tans were around during the fighting in the 19 teens and 1920s. My mother who lived in County Down during that time told me about the Black and Tans. Oliver Cromwell was much earlier (1598-1658).
