Perhaps Schly was used as an abbreviation for this name . If it is Scholey I would be interested in what info you have on this name or what area of Cork these records are from is from , as I have a letter dated 1815 to a Mr George Scholey, Cork . I don't know any genealogists that I can recommend in that area, but I can tell you that you are doing the right thing asking for recommendations. You have to be very careful who you contract to research for you. I've just been bitten - a genealogist approached me after seeing one of my messages on another rootsweb board - and after looking at their website, I decided to take up their offer of help (they appeared above board, and high profile etc). Sadly, this experience has now made me very wary . . . be careful of paying money upfront, and be doubly careful of accepting an email offer from someone, without personally checking out references and recommendations. I live in New Zealand, so being 12,000 miles away makes it very easy to be taken for a ride. Just commonsense I guess - maybe I was too trusting? Hope you have lots of success! Later... on 5 birth certificates of his children he claimed to have come from Co Cork. John married in1855, Catherine HENRY, in Maitland, NSW, Australia. Names of the 1st two boys: John Charles and Thomas Henry. There was also a WilliamJohn. John's big interest was training race horses. Because he regularly visited Victoria, I'm inclined to suspect that he still had a family connection there. I'd like to hear from someone who knew of any Arkins in Co Cork.... I think they were pretty thin on the ground.
