    3. Does anyone know where else I can access Cork Records apart from Ancestry and the Mallow Center? I am trying to locate my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Birmingham b abt 1888 father John Joseph. I can't find her on Ancestry and I can see there is a few Mary Birmingham's born around that time in Cork but I can't afford to pay $10 to view each record and hope that they are the right ones. Thank you Nicci

    3. G'day from Australia I would really appreciate some help in getting some direction in my research. Here is what I know. Patrick Murphy was married to Catherine McCarthy and in 1845 was working as a tailor in Queenstown (Cobh). They had children as follows; Margaret Ann 1835 Thomas 1836 Alice 1839 John 1841 John Joseph 1844 Catherine 1846 Charles 1848 I found these details through the Mallow Heritage Centre and they state that their births were recorded in the Cobh Parish. They couldn't find any details of the marriage of Patrick or Catherine or of the birth of their first child Maria who was born in 1834. So I guess that my question is if they weren't recorded in the Cobh Parish, where else could I look for them? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and I guess a second question where would be the best place to search for marriage/ deaths etc for the other children? Maria, Margaret and Alice all came to Australia and I can't find any record of the others migrating here. I also thought that as Charles was an unusual Irish name he would stick out. With some luck they are just waiting for me to find them! Thanks and regards Ian Donaldson

    3. Dear Ian,   I've found answers on Familysearch.org  and also Ancestry.com (which has a fee).  Good luck.  My Murphys are in the late 1800's.  I also got great information in the 'Irish Census of 1911.' Actually I'm looking for my grandmother's sister(Murphy) who may have gone to Australia in the 1890's or early 1900's.   Mary Fitzsimmons --- On Sun, 9/13/09, Ian Donaldson <allsure@bigpond.net.au> wrote: From: Ian Donaldson <allsure@bigpond.net.au> Subject: [CO CORK] Murphy! 3. Australia did not become a Commonwealth until 1901. Records of immigration before that ( and possibly later) are held by the various States. The first state was New South Wales - check out the indexes on www.records.nsw.gov.au. For other states just try 'google' for archives or immigration etc and the state - eg Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania aka Van Diemans Land. 3. I am interested in your information but am also somewhat ignorant. By state archives, do you mean Australian archives? I have not quite figured out administrative divisions in Ireland and I know nothing about Australia. I did get some index information forwarded to me about Australian passenger lists, with a woman named Norris listed on one. I am not quite sure what to do with that. If these records are by state, does a person have to look state by state? I guess I would like to know more. Thanks. 3. I appreciate all these responses to my original question. It doesn't matter that it's been a while. The people I am looking for are not going anywhere and I've been slow anyway. I did get some good responses when I first posted but I am always open for more. Thanks to all who responded.
