    3. Dear listers. I have now added births/baptisms, marriages, and deaths/burials to the LOANE/LONE website. There are now also links to 'snippets' and land records/leases plus an article on the Devonshire Arms Hotel. The marriages may be of particular interest as many other families in the area are linked to the LOANE family. There are some general links on the Links page and the Guest book is now working (fingers crossed!!). 3. I am currently doing one family (SKEAD) which is Scottish - only one small branch went to Ireland. In the Australian newspaper set, they have the picture of the page and then the transcription next to it, but this is often very incorrect - done by computer - so I spend ages doing corrections which you then submit. Is this how you do the Irish ones? Is this > how you do the Irish ones? That is how I do the Australian and New Zealand ones, which I post on soc.genealogy.australia+nz newsgroup. The Irish ones, which I occasionally post on the Cork email list if there is something of particular interest to the Cork email list, such as calling attention to the mispelling of Castletownroche as Castle Down, Roach, are transcribed from full page images. There is no online archive of page images from the Irish newspapers that I have transcribed. Except for a 1-week period this past year where the Irish Times website allowed free access to their searchable images from the past 150 years, which allowed me to capture and print out many articles about Aherns which I am transcribing one at a time for my Ahern website, everything I've posted has been copied from bound volumes or microfilm at various Libraries. In some cases, such as the Cork County and Cork Corporation Libraries, I have been able to print out images from microfilm to take home and transcribe. At other repositories, such as the National Library in Dublin, the Belfast City Library, and the Linen Hall Library in Belfast, I have had to transcribe it by hand in notebooks, many pages of which still sit in the file cabinet next to where I sit now, waiting to be typed up and put on the Web. See http://world.std.com/~ahern/Irishnews.pdf for description of a talk I give on researching Irish newspapers. -dja

    3. of course it was a light hearted comment. I too spend a great deal of transcribing and trawling through old newspapers world wide , and would hate to think what would happen if my accumulation was added to the list. I was really impressed with the dedication of building the archives. Being a bit of a collector and archivist - as a matter of interest, I have just purchased the Heritage Collection Soft ware, and am gradually adding all those items to it. It is a program which accepts any digital photos or scans as well as Word or PDF docs, video, audios etc and is akin to what museums use (only smaller scale) to record all the items in their collection. Nothing is too small or too large. You create a series of collections - and I am building those for each of the family branches. At present am doing all the old stuff but will eventually get on to making up-to-date collections for grandchildren. It is very quick to use, don't need to cut or paste, and full documents are easily accepted eg - eg book size family stories. It also accepts movies and audio records but I haven't delved into that yet. It means that if you have your ancestor on photo, film, audio, and family history, family tree (in word - doesn't take geds) and any downloads from the net you care to add - then you have all of it in the one collection. you can add Google earth pics, maps, whatever. I am having so much fun and just learning to use it. Hope this is useful, can give more detail if anyone is interested. 3. Seeking anyone researching John O’Connell, b ca 1825 in Ireland, son of Jeremiah O’Connell and Bridget (?). I have been unable to connect John to parents named Jeremiah and Bridget in Ireland. Emigrated to Lawrence Massachusetts ca 1846, married Mary Horan in Lawrence in 1850 and settled in Andover Massachusetts. (Reportedly John emigrated with four brothers but I have found no record of any of them.) Mary Horan was born ca 1825 in Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland and was the daughter of Charles and Mary Horan. John and Mary had eight children including Bridget (Abercrombie), Charles J., William, John A., David, Arthur, George and Mary Jane (Warden). The family lived in Andover Massachusetts until John and Mary’s deaths in 1896 Reply to Blaine_OConnell@alumni.holycross.edu

None of my Ahern relations went to Australia. None of my Aherns were from Castletownroche. Nor am I related to any Miles or Woolastons. You are correct that I am leaving a trail, but it is there for anyone to follow wherever it may lead them. I'd say that 95% of the articles I've transcribed over the years for the IrelandOldNews.com website make no mention of any Aherns. 3. Hi Loreen Not sure whether you have had any further replies to your request - am having trouble with my computer and emails. What, or who, specifically, are you looking for? Unfortunately I haven't found a way to search in the Mallow website without paying - as you indicate - and it is at least €40 up-front for a single search with no guarantee of success. I am used to the reasonable costs of the Scotland's People website which needs just £5 to start with and this gives 4 or 5 images within the cost. €40 with no guarantee of a hit seems steep to me but maybe I have missed something???? -- Best wishes Ray ********************************************************** >From Ray Hennessy Forenames website: www.whatsinaname.net Preferred Email address: ray@whatsinaname.net Hints for Scotland's People at http://bit.ly/WIAN-SCP **********************************************************
