When I saw your posting I went directly to it to see if I could find Agnes Bridget Gaffigan who arrived at Queenstown on the "Celtic" in July 1912 on her way to County Tyrone, with a stop-over at St. Patrick's in Dundalk to get married. She was from San Francisco, California, and married Michael Joseph McCarroll (or Carroll as he received his citizenship in the U.S.). But, alas, it was not to be. Couldn't even locate a John Gaffigan who arrived sometime in 1914 to visit his new grandson. Hopefully, it will connect some others that are searching.
Hi Patricia, The departure of an Agnes Gaffigan is very interesting. I don't know if it is my grandmother, but it sure seems as though it might be because of the age and her birth. When she came over in 1912 she was 23, of full age. It is puzzling, however, in that she did marry at Dundalk and her given name at that time would be a McCarroll not Gaffigan. She and Michael Joseph McCarroll were around the Beragh - Omagh area of Tyrone and they did not have my father until 1914. They then settled in Fintona to own a "saloon",as it was called in America, sell shoes, coffins and auction horses - and to raise a passel of kids. This public house was very busy what with all of the children running around. I have been trying to piece this all together to come up with just one "story" because Agnes was very closed mouth about it, and even her children (my father included) did not know much about her early years. They did not know just when Michael J. Carroll (as he used the name after naturalization in San Francisco - and recall, the earthquake and fire destroyed all of those records in San Francisco), had traveled back and forth between Ulster and California. I do know that the John Amos Gaffigan was her father and he had sailed to Moville in 1914, ostensibly to visit his grandson. He was a printer and painter, so the compositor fits. Gaffigan was a very interested person in that he maintained a journal later in life (which caused some in the family to believe a lot of his stories). He was born in Scotland of Irish parents and maintained that he was a Scot, even though his aunts who lived in San Francisco where he and his brother went with his mother when Patrick the father passed away. He wanted to be different than all those Irish that lived in San Francisco at the time. The family went back to San Francisco in 1924, aboard the Cameronia, and they were all U.S. citizens even though the children were born in Ireland. Thank you very much because this does fill in one hole, John Amos Gaffigan's departure for America, and makes the other parts a little more interesting. I've have been researching the US State Department records at the US National Archives and found registration documents from the years 1907 to 1928. These documents were filed by Americans citizens with the US Consulates at Dublin, Cork and Belfast when they traveled to Ireland to visit their aged parents or for a variety of reasons. The information includes the townland place of birth and connects them to their location in the US. I have transcribed the key info and posted it to a web site at http://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/ Use the search function of the web browser to locate names and places. If you don't find your ancestor listed search for their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles or cousins. Some of these people seem to have returned to Ireland for their permanent residence so their descendants may live in Ireland today. I uploaded a sample document for the Quinn family registration - use the links on the left column to see the documents - the family picture is on page 2. Hope this helps your search. Regards, Sheila

Hello again. I understand that occupiers were listed which covers those who did not actually own land, but that may not include absolutely everyone. Hello Bethane - the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland, taken between 1847 and 1864 (roughly) has no KILLIANs in Co Cork that I can see. Similarly the IGI search brings up no entries for Co Cork. The name seems to be centred largely in Roscommon, Longford and Galway, with a few in West Meath and a few more in Ulster. You might like to have a look if you haven't already: http://www.failteromhat.com/ is a good site for the Griffiths, just go to Census/Directories and scroll down. I didn't see any likely entries in the LDS 1880 US census - have you located them in that year?
