Sometimes the naming of the daughters was reversed, so the first daughter could have been named after either of the grandmothers. My Anglican Irish great grandparents still followed the naming pattern for their children, although they were 2nd generation to have been born in Canada. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Hennessy" <ray@whatsinaname.net> To: <countycork@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 6:00 AM Subject: Re: [CO CORK] [CO CORK] naming patterns for RC Irish families > 1st son - father's father > 2nd son - mother's father > 3rd son - father > Other sons: grandparents' and parents' siblings, best friends, local > worthies > > 1st dtr - mother's mother > 2nd dtr - father's mother > 3rd dtr - mother > Other dtrs: as for other sons
I thought along those lines until I figured there are potential errors in deducting parents using that pattern. For example: If there were children born to that family you didn't know about - perhaps died before they were ever recorded. The lack of knowledge of their names could throw off your search. If the was a second wife and you didn't know she was a second wife - how could you match up a family with any certainty. -----Original Message----- From: countycork-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:countycork-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jane Sullivan Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 8:49 AM To: irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com; irl-co-kildare@rootsweb.com; countycork@rootsweb.com Subject: [CO CORK] naming patterns for RC Irish families I remember seeing a posting a while ago about the naming patterns use by Irish families. I do not know for certain the names of parents & grandparents of my ancestor, but am trying to use a process of elimination using the names of the children. Could someone remind me of the naming pattern? I have a Thomas McEvoy who was the son of a David McEvoy & Mary Hayden. Thomas had a son called David and daughters called Mary, Julia, Ellen, Alice, Beatrice, Charlotte & Edith. A first child a girl, named Margaret Rose died soon after arrival in Australia. In Thomas's will, he leaves money to his brother David, and sisters Mary, Ellen & Julia. Is it possible to try to work out what David McEvoy & Mary Hayden's parents' names may have been. Thanks. Hi all, I am new to this list and wondering if anyone can give me some guidance regarding avenues to explore in Cork ( web links, parish records, historical societies etc) My gt gt grandfather Mathew FitzPatrick died in Bandon, Co. Cork in 1843. Any ideas as to where to start? Many thanks, Sue (NSW, Aus)
I'm trying to find the names of the parents and siblings of Justin McCarthy who was the father of Justin Huntly McCarthy. Justin senior was originally from County Cork where he wrote for a newspaper. He moved to England where he continued writing and became a member of Parliament. He was born in 1830 and died in 1912. His son, also a writer and member of Parliament, was married briefly to the actress Cissy Loftus. Jo
Thanks so much for your reply. I'll check out the website. There is a monument in Cork City that has the names of two of my relatives on it: james O'Callaghan and Patrick. I think in late 1800s they were involved in Fenian movement. In case you haven't seen this: This article is shared courtesy of Dick Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter. - Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! With St. Patrick's Day only a few days away, now is a good time to start looking online for "all things Irish." Indeed, there is a brand-new Irish genealogy blog that looks like a great resource. I see a lot of new blogs but this one is unusual in that it already has a LOT of info online, including interviews, "how to" articles, information about naming patterns, and more. Here is the announcement: Both newcomers to Irish genealogy research and experienced researchers alike will find helpful advice, tips, and tactics in Deborah Large Fox's blog, Help! The Faery Folk Hid My Ancestors! Because of the loss of so many records throughout Ireland's tragic history, Irish genealogical research can be notoriously difficult and frustrating. Deborah's blog deals with these difficulties by helping fellow researchers find those genealogical gems and treasures that often go undiscovered. Interviews of librarians, professional researchers, and website administrators are also included in the blog, along with helpful links to online databases and resources. Find all this and more at http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com. Do you have comments, questions, or corrections to this article? This idea of nationalism and being 100% of the country of one's citizenship is a rather recent development historically. Y-DNA deals with one's scientific origins which more often than not have little to do with one's citizenship. Cliff. Easy for my parents, easy for me, not so easy for my children! Dad was 100% Irish. My mother was 50% Irish and 50%English. Therefore, I am 75%Irish and 25%English. My children....Jack's mother was 75%Irish (County Cork Mahoney) and 25%German. His dad is 50%Irish and 50%French/German. Therefore, their dad is 62.5%Irish and 37.5 French/German. Anyone care to calculate my children's mix? One must take into consideration a daughter's denial of any English roots despite my documentation! As for Jack's French/German. He claims his great-grandfather whom he remembers spoke with a German accent. He was from Alsace-Lorraine, so it's possible even though records say French.
