Sharon at sjones04@tampabay.rr.com writes: << can anyone give me any information on Coolmountain -- parish, location within the county >> Sharon, I can do that part of it for you. Coolmountain is a townland of a bit less than 1000 acres, in Inchigeelagh civil parish. The coordinates (in case you have a Discovery map 85) are 177 604. But most people don't seem to have these maps, so I'll give you a collection of directions (Coolmountain is really in the "middle of nowhere" <g>). It's 6 miles NW of Dunmanway, about 4 and a half miles between SSW and SW of the town of Inchigeelagh and the same distance SSE of Ballingeary. It's on the steep southeastern slopes of Carrigmount and Knockrour mountains. There were only about 4 homes there 30 years ago, but there is a school there !! Probably to serve all of the other surrounding, very rural, townlands, too. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

I just ordered a reel from my FHC that will have the wills index on it. Naturally at this moment I cannot find my receipt with the film #, but I found it in the FHC catalog by looking under Ireland and Principal Probate Registry (Dublin). I rented a reel that had "Calendar of wills and admonishments, 1915-1916" since my person died in early 1915. It is supposed to give extracts such as name, residence, date, date and district of probate, name of executor. Then someone told me that copies were often kept in the counties too, so I could contact Cork after I had the various references. Sharon, Coolmountain is within the Dunmanway district of County Cork. Any records after 1864 through 1880 are available on microfilm from the LDS Church. You must first check the birth index for the various years to find the volume number and page your relatives are located on and then using that info order the correct birth record microfilms. Hi. I am new to the list and am looking for information on the ROCHE family. I have found that my gr grandfather, Bartholomew Roche (Patrick Roche & Norry Cronin), was born in Coolmountain, Cork, Ireland in 1866. He married Mary Murphy (Patrick Murphy & Ellen Turley) in 1892 in NJ. She was also from Ireland, although I do not know exactly where. If anyone has any connection with the above, I'd be most happy to talk with you. Also, can anyone give me any information on Coolmountain -- parish, location within the county, records availability, etc.? I'd be most grateful for any help. You can e-mail me off-list at <sjones04@tampabay.rr.com> with any comments, suggestions, etc. Thank you! Sharon
Hi I have re subscribed and am looking for any information on the BECHER family. My 5xGt. Grandfather was Lionel George BECHER. He died in 1741 after the battle of Carthagena(War of Jenkins Ear) and left 2 children, Joyner and a sister, to be brought up by Uncles in Wokingham. A letter written in 1838 suggests that they were connected to a Mr. BECHER of Southwell, Notts.proven by Arms. I suspect that Lionel had Irish connections as did Edward BECHER, the 6th son of Thomas BECHER of Sherkin, who settled in Southwell. Any help would be gratefully received as Lionel George is a mystery. Many thanks. Eileen.
It's my understanding that wills during those early years were handled by the Consistorial court if the estate involved only one diocese and in the Prerogative Court if the estate was larger and involved property in more than one diocese. I believe that all wills from the consistorial courts were lost in the 1922 fire in the public records office and that the same in general applies to wills from the Prerogative Court, except that family information in these latter wills was abstracted for the period before 1800 by Sir Robert Betham in the early 1800s. I obtianed very valuable family information from this source. Could you tell me where you obtained the index to Cork wills? I am not aware of that source. > Tim
I have some new information and would like to contact two former list members who may have changed their email addresses. If anyone who formerly used these names sees this will you please respond. Tokiakton bdurley@chorus.net
Are there any listers out there who would like to swap notes on the old Jewish families of Cork? My interest is pre 1820 when firstly Solomon Hyams and later his son Joseph Hyams were umbrella makers in Cork. Alan P Sydney Australia
Bill Thank you for that. I remember seeing Albert Casey's O'Kief Coshe Mang, years ago respecting the north Cork Blackwater Valley bdm records it holds, in Cork city library, and very useful it was too. In fact I found a great aunt's baptism there that the parish priest said he had not got in his church register, that is until I revferred him to Casey and requested a second search! I don't suppose it is on the net is it? on 2/2/02 11:11 pm, William P. Hello: In reviewing the Index to Cork Wills, I see three that I would like to acquire copies of, if possible. The dates for these entries are 1717, 1760 and 1775. The 1775 entry states the will was admitted to probate in 1775 - Phillimor's Index to Last Wills (London, 1960). Can anyone give me advice on where I would write to enquire about copies and the cost of each copy. If copies of these wills do not exist in Ireland, is the reference to Phillimor's Index in London my best bet? Thanks for your help. Susan Eddy Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

Does a list exist of the names of townlands within the Glengarriff Registration District? I am trying to narrow down locations for some 1860's Mahony births. Thanks for any suggestions, Barb Glassel

Hullo Maureen My Callaghans were from Millstreet and possibly Dromtarriff the next parish. John Callaghan who was born in Millstreet, Co Cork joined the Britsih Army 3rd Dragoon Guards and headed for India in 18675, never to return. His father will have married before 1840, and could have been Daniel Callaghan and Ellen Barry who married in 1836 in Dromtarriff. I do not have any knowledge of an Andrew Callaghan I am afraid. Hi Pete Thanks for responding. Fascinating to hear your tale. You were lucky to get information in the 18th century. I am afraid 1820 is a bit early for my Mary Mannix. She will have been born I suspect in 1840s. I am following a lead that she was from Dromtarriff parish in north Cork, which is adjacent to the parish of Millstreet where I know her husband John Callaghan was born, from his military papers I obtained from the Public Record Office at Kew, outside London, where as a matter of interest his wife was entered as Mary Manners! It must have been the Irish brogue that was responsible1 A Tim Mannix married a Brigid Mannix in Dromtarriff in 1843. Mind you Mary Mannix will have been very young to have married John Callaghan at Millstreet on 11 November 1859. Unfortunately the parish priest says the marriage is not in the register and he would not let me look at the register as I had not got the permission of the Bishop of Kerry, in which diocese the St Patrick's church is located. I have a feeling that Mary Mannix ended up in the workhouse at Millstreet when her man left for India. I wonder if anybody on the web can search the Dublin copy so that I can at least confirm who their parents were?
