My ggrandmother was Mary CONROY, daughter of John and Katherine (MALOON) CONROY. She was born abt 1835 in Ireland and married in WI USA in 1853 to Anderson WOOD. My grandfather always said she was from County Cork but I have been unable to prove this (maybe she boarded the ship at Cork?). Any information or suggestions on where to look would be appreciated. Eileen Kitzmiller in his book "In search of the Forlorn Hope" does not list the 107th in Cork at any time, he does list the Royal Sussex in 1874 but that was before they were joined to the 107th. Could it be that he was attached to some other unit but later transferred to the 2nd Royal Sussex (formerly 107th) ? Michael
Dear Friends, My great grandfather John F. Goggin, born June 05, 1844 in Co. Cork was the son of a Goggin and (mother) a Mangan. John came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1868 as a marble cutter. He worked for the Rockefellers on their estate as a lamplighter during the first mini depression. Can anyone tell me where in County Cork I might search for these families? Several of his children returned to County Cork in the 1920's and did not find any family, however the grandchildren admit that their parents weren't sure where in Cork to look. I would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank You, Karen Goggin Simi Valley, California __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Raised at Chinsurah, India in 1853 for service with the Honourable East India Company, the 3rd Regiment of Bengal European Infantry in 1862 transferred to the British Army and was renamed the107th Regiment of Foot (Bengal Light Infantry). In 1881 it was amalgamated with 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot to become 2nd Bn, The Royal Sussex Regiment. Both come under the purview of the Sussex Combined Services Museum. Contact details are on the site: http://www.army.mod.uk/ceremonialandheritage/museums/details/m055suss.htm It may prove worth your while to write to the curator. You mention elsewhere his marriage in 1875 in Chichester. It may be mere coincidence but Chichester was the 35th Regiment's home for many years. The original association between the 35th and 107th dates from 1863, when 78 men of the 35th Regiment volunteered to join the 107th at Lucknow in India. In 1875 when the 107th arrived in England for the first time it shared a Depot with the 35th at Chichester. If the paybook you mention definitely places him in the 107th then conceivably his marriage took place in the year of his return from India. It is also possible that he was among the 78 men of the 35th who joined the 107th at Lucknow. In any event since you have his regiment(s?) you are in a position to have his military record searched at the Public Records Office in UK. I'm afraid this has to be done either by visit in person or by a professional researcher. I can recommend such if you contact me offline. Hi, I have just discovered that my family was from County Cork. From the information that I have in the 1860 Orange County, NY census, John McGuire/Maguire was 36, Ellen Danihy was 34 (his wife), Barry Riordan was 23 and I'm presuming his wife, Sarah was 24 , (maybe John Maguire's sister) and a Mike McGuire/Maguire (perhaps John's brother) was 21. There were a few children and an older man named Richard Gorman 62 and an other fellow from another county which I can't make out either his last name or county yet. All of the above folks were from County Cork, from what I can decipher. Is anyone on this list familiar with any Maguire/McGuire's or Danihy or Riordan's of County Cork? I would appreciate greatly any direction or information. Thanks, Elizabeth
Paula, Go to my Genealogy Web site www.westcork.homestead.com and click on "Bere Peninsula Families". You will then get Riobard O'Dwyer's site. Under his name, at the top, will be ordering information on the details which follow. If you proceed down to Allihies Parish marriages "3537 marriages sorted by wife" and then alphabetically you will find the following entry; Harrington(Duve), Ellen Connolly, Denis Cluin townland The reason for the difference in townlands is probably because this is the wife's townland whereas you may have the husband's townland. Good luck with your research. Bill Fahy
If there's no snow on the ground in Bandon, could somebody please try to locate the gravestone of Elizabeth SALTER at Kilbrogan Church of Ireland, read the inscription and take a picture of it for me? Most of our snow is melting, and I'd like to find and photograph the stone myself, but there's one heck of a big puddle between here and Bandon, Ireland. Carroll B. I am seeking information on my G-Great Grandparents Denis Connolly, born about 1846 and Ellen Harrington. As far as I know they came from the Beara Peninsula in Cork, in the area of Glenera, near the town of Allihies. Their daughter, my Great-Grandmother Ellen was born about 1866 in Ireland. She came to the U.S. as a very small child, with her uncle, her parents remained in Ireland, so I've been told. The family settled in Massachusetts. Is this familiar to anyone? Paula
Barbara, Thank you for the alternate spellings. The PERYER name was originally found in the Ontario Archives as Perrier. Eileen
Colin, Thank you for your help. The Regimental information you supplied was a partial match with that on a remaining section of an old paybook of John SHIELDS. However, the paybook exerpt ends in 1875 with his marriage in Chichester. As the next time we have evidence of his location is Mallow, is it possible there was an army presence there after 1880? I wonder how early servicemen retired in those days.... Eileen
Hi Eileen, I do not know if this will help you. From a Book called "Records and Badges of the British Army 1900" "2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.... In 1861 it was re-organised and brought into the British Line under the title of the 107th (Bengal Infantry) Regiment, although it did not make its appearance in the Army List until 1863. After serving some years longer in Bengal and Madras, the battalion came to England in 1875. In 1881 it became under Territorial rearrangement 2nd Battalion , Royal Sussex Regiment. In 1882 it proceeded to Malta and thence, in January, 1885 to Egypt, where it was for some months stationed at Cairo. It went on th India, in December, 1885, where it is still (1899) stationed." You can rent each of them at an LDS Family History Center. Elizabeth not the author of the query above
Bev, BALLYONANE is just outside the town of Cloyne and is in the Parish of Cloyne. There may be a slight confusion with BALLYSOVANE in the neighbouring Parish of Aghada. In either case the relevant RC records are on file at MALLOW HERITAGE. If you can give me more detail of your interest, by e-mailing me off-list, I may be able to determine which is the townland of interest to you. I live on the other side of Cloyne in Castlemary. Where can I find a copy of "Irish Family Names" by Peadar O'Donovan, Skibbereen Printers, 1991. Thank you,, Colin Ferguson
I've just found my g.grandfathers birth Cert and found his mothers name was Ellen GABAGAN/GAHAGAN/GEOHEGAN etc etc. Father was Patrick Flanagan. The mothers name looks like GABEGAN - but I've never heard of this - has anyone else? And what county (I assumed Cork - but could be wrong!) is it from? Thanks Jane
