If you are getting any digest sent by Rootsweb as an attachment, it is your isp turning it into one. Rootsweb does not accept or send out attachments. Some isps turn digests into attachments if they are over a certain byte size... you need to talk to them about resetting your computer so it doesn't happen. I can't help you with this, and Rootsweb will tell you just what I have, that it's your isp, not Rootsweb. Searching for information on Patrick Delay and wife, Ann Cronin, parents of Ellen Delay born in County Cork about 1832. Ellen may have emigrated to Buffalo, New York, USA about 1840. Any information gratefully received. Thanks, Tom O'Hare.
My Gt Gt Grandmother, Catherine O'CONNOR was born abt 1821 in Bandon, Co. Cork. She married [I don't know where!] John WATSON, a soldier in The Royal Regiment [from West Norfolk,] in about 1853. Their daughter, my Gt Grandmother, Catherine WATSON, was bn in 1857 on a homeward bound troopship from India, off Gibralter. This 2nd Catherine married my Gt Grandfather, Louis Henry PALMER, in Wisbech, Cambs, UK, on 11 March 1883. John & Catherine's other 2 children, John & William, both died young and are buried at Wretton, West Norfolk. Catherine O'CONNOR died 2 July 1897 either in Wisbech, Cambs, or Wretton, West Norfolk. I still have to get her death registration details and certificate. I'm afraid I know nothing else about Catherine O'Connor at the moment - not even if she had siblings. Grateful for suggestions and advice on how to trace Catherine's family. Can anyone expand upon the border moving? Im having a terrible time finding the exact location of my grandmothers family. Her documents on this side of the pond say "county Cork" but nothing further. Maybe if I expand my search to include Kerry I may have better luck? At what point did the border settle to its current place? Regards, Susan Jeffery Tokyo, Japan Researching Ryan, Slattery of Co. Looking for links to Margaret Mary CRONIN b1834 Kenmare in County KERRY arrived in Australia in 1850 aboard "John Knox". I have no parent details suggesting Orphanage or Workhouse. I have tried KERRY List for 12 months without success. It has been suggested that CORK / KERRY border has moved from time to time and that CRONIN surname is more common in CORK. Family has links to Cashman family of Cork, with several inter marriages after arrivals in Australia. Also possible links to Catherine CRONIN b1832 and Hannah CRONIN b 1836 who arrived in Australia in 1855. Any possibilities will be fully explored.

Not this will be of much help, but I have an Ellen Cashman that married a John Hartnett (Harnett) and had a daughter, Margaret, who was born about 1830 in Ireland. They are believed to be from Cork. Sorry it really isn't of any help, but thought I would pass on the info JUST in case you have this family in your line. ----- Original Message ----- From: PETER BOOTH Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 6:49 AM To: CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cork] CRONIN / CASHMAN Looking for links to Margaret Mary CRONIN b1834 Kenmare in County KERRY arrived in Australia in 1850 aboard "John Knox". I do not wholely agree with this, Act of 1858 transferred Government of India to the Crown, with a Secretary of State. European manned Regiments were transferred to British Army. Patrick Leary married Honora Hodnett around Galley Head, Cty Cork and three children, Michael, Margaret and Michael all emigrated to the greater Boston area. Honnora remained in Ireland and passed on around 1921. A son Jeremiah survived, but no record of his fate. Daniel Connelly and Hannah McCarthy emrigrated and lived in Boston, MA around 1870. Daughter Ellen married Michael O'Leary son of Patrick and Honora Hodnett Leary. Info on Hodnett desired. Hodnett is a common name around SKibbereen and Ardfield.
Eileen, To recap the lineage of the 107th: 1854-1858 Honourable East India Company 3rd Bengal European Light Infantry 1858-1861 3rd Bengal Light Infantry taken onto British Army Establishment as 1861-1880 107th Bengal Light Infantry In 1857 in events known variously as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Rebellion and the Anglo-Indian War of Independence, Indian troops of the Honourable East India Company's army launched a rebellion. At the time the HEIC, (one of the several Companies of Merchants that had been a preferred method of colonial expansion), was a law unto itself and maintained what amounted to a private army in India. Following the rebellion, the London government decided to rein in the HEIC and as part of that solution the military forces in India became wholly incorporated into the British Army 'establishment'. It is this reorganization that is reflected in the change of title on the paybook. You can conclude therefore that John Shields served in the HEIC forces and was subsequently transferred to the British establishment as noted. He would thus almost certainly have received the Indian Mutiny Medal. 'The Indian Mutiny Medal Roll (British Forces)1857-1859' by Kevin Asplin which is a complete list of 50,700 men who received the medal does not show a John Shields listed among the HEIC forces. However, there is a John Shiels listed with the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. I wonder if your researcher looked at this man? It wouldn't be beyond the bounds of possibility that a man from the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers could possibly end up in the 107th. (The 1st Bengal European Fusiliers had a post-Mutiny history similar to that of the 3rd, becoming the101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers in 1861 and in 1881 the latter combined with the104th Royal Bengal Fusiliers to become the Royal Munster Fusiliers). Perhaps you can send me scans of the paybook off-list, (I must admit I'd just like to see it anyway). If you decide to write to the museum you should consider sending them photo-copies. Brothers of Owen possibly are George and James still feel unsure of: Owen was b. 1793 d. New Limerick, ME 1879; George Hannigan b. circa 1795, Ireland; James Hannigan b. 1800, Ireland. Annie was b. circa 1800 in Ireland d.26 Apr 1867 Owen and Annie left their infant child in Ireland, so the story goes, with the oldest son [or possibly a brother] the child died, and the son is believed to have also come over to US later more stories but no real connect. My father is now 81 and he and his brother are the last of their generation[3rd] and both now failing so would love to find the roots before they pass on. Hello Denis, The information you supplied directly coincided with dates in the paybook. The paybook was originally was for the East India Company" The title was scratched out and replaced with "Her Majesty's East India Forces". I had a professional researcher look for discharge papers, Medal Rolls, pension records and Chaplain's Returns but to no avail. However, I do know he received a pension. The help you and others have given is invaluable....perhaps there are other records at the museum that can be accessed. I thank you! Eileen
Hi Colin, Thank you for the leads. The information you supplied re: regimental changes was new to me. It may help me find out when John SHIELDS retired from the service and perhaps where his first wife, Louisa PERYER may be buried. Eileen

Karen: Saw your post re GOGGIN/MANGAN. Don't know if there is a connection here but wanted to let you know of my Cogan family so have attached a family group sheet for them. Note the alias name below for Kit COGAN/GOGGIN. She apparently went by GOGGIN, but I have no further information as to the reason. Not sure how accurate the information is on this family except where I have dates, places, etc. The surname MANGAN does not ring any bells with me. Do you know what the "F" stands for in your great grandfather's name, John F. Goggin? I descend from Nora COGAN and Daniel CREEDON. Looking forward to hearing from you! Cork was the son of a Goggin and (mother) a Mangan. John came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1868 as a marble cutter. He worked for the Rockefellers on their estate as a lamplighter during the first mini depression. Can anyone tell me where in County Cork I might search for these families? Several of his children returned to County Cork in the 1920's and did not find any family, however the grandchildren admit that their parents weren't sure where in Cork to look. I would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank You, Karen Goggin Simi Valley, California __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Dear Elizabeth I have a convict that was sent out to Tasmania named Catherine Danahy( and various other variations over the years) from County Cork. On her convict record it states she had a sister Ellen. She was sent out to Tasmanina(Van Diemen's Land up to 1853) in 1847 and was 20 at the time. It says a surname for Ellen which is not the same as Catherine but I will have to enlarge it as it is very poor writing. Do you want me to send you a picture of the surname and see if it is the same, two sets of eyes might be better than one if the dates fit. It would be a great breakthrough if these were sisters as the convict records are good after they arrived in Australia but not very good in Ireland. It does not state the town only Cork but says Ellen was at her native place. Hope to hear some good news from your end Pam Calverley Canberra Australia _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com
