    1. [Cork] Re: Placenames
    2. Kae Lewis
    3. I think Pete's reply and others on the subject is an important point about Irish research: there are multiple places with the same name throughout Ireland. So just because you find a placename you want, doesn't mean you have the precise one you are looking for. I recently went through birth death and marriage records for Irish civil registration and was very confused by the placenames given there. I wanted to look only at events that occurred in selected counties but these records just give a district name (nearest town or city?) which did not always mean anything to me. So I used the Townland search website: http://www.seanruad.com/ This is an invaluable site which could save everybody a lot of time when looking for a place. However every time I entered a placename that was given in the birth , death or marriage index for a particular event it would come up with 2 - 12 possibilities, all in different counties. Makes it really difficult to narrow down the particular certificates you want. I dont think you have this problem to the same extant in England, in my experience. 1. [Cork] DONNELLY
    2. Marjorie
    3. Looking for information about my DONNELLY ancestors, who were grocers/wine merchants, Church of Ireland, and living in Mitchelstown, Cork, in 1805. John DONNELLY, who had a grocery business on the Town Square, married Elizabth GRAHAM in Cork & Ross, in 1818. Their children were baptized in Mitchelstown between 1819 and 1826: Anne Eliza, Michael BARKER, Ursula Hannah, John SALTWELL, and Charles. By 1829, they had moved to Limerick, where Elizabeth LOVE, their last child, was baptized at St. Michael's. According to family lore, John's parents were Michael DONNELLY and Elizabeth DUNNE, whose parents were Charles DUNNE and Margaret McNEALE. Michael was said to have a brother Ramon (Raedhmon). I haven't been able to verify these details. Have searched the usual sources, including directories, deeds, probate indexes, early census substitutes, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. [Cork] Looking for family of Wm. O'DONNELL and Mary (KIELY) O'DONNELL, Mitchelstown, Co Cork
    2. egallagher
    3. I am looking for any information on the family or history of William O'DONNELL and Mary (KIELY) O'DONNELL. I know they had 5 daughters, the oldest of which Elizabeth (Lily) O'DONNELL emigrated to Iowa with her uncle Fr. John RYAN in the mid 1930s. She remained in Iowa until her death in 1988. I received a copy of her Social Security application which listed her birth place as Mitchelstown. I know her four sisters died of TB in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Looking for any other relatives from either side of the family. What is the local parish in which they were baptized and/or buried? Cemetary records? Any idea where to find cemetary records? I appreciate any help you can give. Madeleine

    1. [Cork] TERESA who?
    2. jandshell
    3. Dear All, Does anyone have a Teresa in their family born in Cork 1836 or 1837? She may be my great grandmother if :- a) she married a soldier called James Jarrett about 1858 b) she had children Louisa Jarrett b ~ 1858/9, William Jarrett b ~ 1860/1, Jane Jarrett b ~ 1866/7 all in Cork but we don't know if city or county; and Teresa b ~ 1868/9 according to the 1881 census, in "England" (no county or town) c) she was a widow in 1881 living with the children in Salford, Lancashire. Family legend says that James Jarrett was killed in India, but we can find no mention of him whatsoever. We would love to hear from anybody who could suggest Teresa's maiden name, or even advise us on tracing James Jarrett who probably was in one of the Cork military establishments during the 1850s & 60s Thankyou from their great grandson John. 1. [Cork] Danahy's and Leonard's of County Cork
    2. Hi, I have just found some information on the internet which shows, whom I believe to my ancestors, as John Danahy and Ellen Leonard. They are both listed as baptised at Boherbue, County Cork, Ireland. Now, I note on the bottom of the page reference to a book on St. Mary's Roman Catholic parish, Boherbue, County Cork. Is anyone familiar with this parish and is there a mailing address for this parish if it still exists....or someplace where the records may be kept? Thanks, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York

    1. [Cork] Gentle reminders - please read!
    2. Maura
    3. Hi all, I am sending this message to all the lists I run in the hopes that it will help everyone, whether we've been doing this for a long time, or we've just started...... I get private emails all the time asking questions which I don't mind answering, but the answers are given on the pages I have made, so that must mean not everyone is -using- them.... :( My Helpful Hints page in particular was developed because those were the questions I answered on lists all the time (and I just got tired of typing them all the time). So please..... 1. Write a good query! There are plenty of times I read a posting and for the life of me I can't figure out what that person wants. Read the section on How to Write a Successful Query on the Hints page. 2. The SHAMROCKROOTS page has a section called Mailing List Basics. That section explains it all..... it also has a link to the archives page for all Rootsweb lists if you need to do a search. 3. We also have a Helping Hands project associated with the IrelandGenWeb located off the SHAMROCKROOTS page. Check it out, or join it! 4. We also have a great Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project for listing any tombstone **not in Ireland** which lists a place of origin in Ireland. I've listed a few there that I have found in my searches of cemeteries, they aren't even my relations but maybe it will help someone. That page has a search feature where you can search for all the submissions of a certain surname or county. Use it, and if you run across (or trip over!) any tombstones which list place of origin, consider posting it there. Hope this helps.....
