    1. [Cork] GILLAN lightkeeper
    2. Holly Gillan
    3. Hi listers, I have recently received an e-mail relative to my research for GILLAN ancestors in County Cork. I reads as follows: IGSI - Bere Peninsula Families, County Cork, Husbands, Allihies Parish, Gillan, John (lightkeeper) Bowen, Mary Lighthouse. I have no idea what this means or how to follow up on this information. Would SKS out there point me in the right direction? The only information I have to lead me to County Cork with appears in an obit stating the family came from there. I have no parish and have very little experience researching Irish records. Thank you, Holly in sunny Florida _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

    1. [Cork] US Vet's Admin Records
    2. Maura
    3. I'm sending this as a reminder to all my lists of a Helpul Hint on my page (url below) and as proof it works! If you are not in the US, it still might help you if you have a US relative you need info on.... Twice now I have sent for records from the Veteran's Administration - once for my grandfather (which provided much information and led me to the McGlynn line in Brooklyn from Ireland which I previously did not know about), and then for my dear Dad (because I needed info on his first marriage and no one was talking about it -- so I had to get the info another way). Figuring this marriage info was in his VA claim (because I remembered a large "discussion" about it one summer), I sent a letter just asking for his VA file, giving only his name, date of birth, date of death, and some info I had that I thought might be helpful (addresses we had lived at, that he fought in the Pacific Theatre etc). Where did I send it? In each case I just sent it to my regional office, which for me was Atlanta since I live in Alabama (even tho they didn't live there, that is what I was told to do). The regional office then sends to whatever office holds the file. (In my grandfathers case it was NY, in my fathers case it indeed was in Atlanta since he died here in Alabama with me, and that is where the last correspondence of his death cert was ). Now in my grandfather's case nearly 3 years ago, I got nearly 300 pages of info on his Spanish American war record, his marriage certificate (bingo!), records of war injuries (very detailed), his death cert, my grandmother's application for pension, ending with her death certificate. Got all this within a month. Now in Daddy's case, the usual "Petzolt curse" was involved, as I sent away and never heard anything for a year. So I picked up the phone and called around in Washington DC til I got the right office, and finally found a very nice gentleman who said the man in charge had died right around that time and much was left at loose ends, so he started the paper trail for me again. It has been almost exactly 2 months since then to yesterday when I received nearly 200 pages of info in my mailbox. In my fathers case, it was very interesting because many of you may know many WW2 records were destroyed in a fire, but since his copies were in his VA file, I have them, including some with burned edges! I did get the info on his first marriage, details of his war injury since he was claiming disability, and other things I had anyway (but might help someone who did not have these things) like his funeral expenses, application for a flag on the casket, death cert, even my own birth certificate as he was claiming me (then) as a minor child. Did I mention all of this is FREE? Yup, free. I do not think you have to be related directly to that person, as technically it goes to the FOIA (freedom of information act) Office of the VA. So if you have someone who may have gotten VA benefits, or even just applied for benefits even if they got turned down (because that's in a file somewhere too).... this could be a goldmine of information. And in my case, my Dad would never talk about his war injury, and now I finally know the details. So take a peek at the Helpful Hints page (as I often remind people ) there are sections there on what military records are available, and how to get those great VA files (a well kept secret, and one I expect eventually will be something we have to pay for.... due to the boom in genealogy... so take advantage of it). And by the way.... another "hint"..... when you write for anything to any office or library, use the term "family history" not "genealogy". For some reason, "family history" gets better results. Hope this helps someone..... I know it's certainly helped me, and made me feel closer to my Dad. 1. [Cork] England and related surnames in Cork
    2. Hi Listers , I am researching the England family in Cork and am reposting my interests as new info has come to light . Bishop John England was born in Cork City in 1786 , the first child of Thomas England and Honora Lordan . My Lordans place of origin varies according to the source , but they were from the Dunderrow /Innishannon ,/Bandon / Enniskeane area . According to the new info , Bishop John England had a cousin called CALNAN from BANDON . Apparently also , one of the Bishops sisters married a FALVEY from INNISHANNON . I would love to hear from anyone researching these surnames in this area Regards Carol Jones (Wales UK)

    1. [Cork] Shine surname
    2. BR Shine
    3. Hi Listers I'm researching my family and am interested in any information about "Shine" families who emigrated from county Cork to the Dudley area west of Birmingham UK in the 1840s. I've located 4 of these families on the 1861 census all living in Campbell Street but cannot establish any relationship between the families themselves. However, of particular interest to me is the whereabouts of one Daniel Shine whom, I believe, is my GGF. Despite searching the whole of the 1861 census Dudley area I cannot find him (although some of the film is very difficult to read). Other facts about Daniel Shine:- One Daniel Shine married a Mary Kelly in Birmingham (Index Entry 1851 Mar 16 402) - marriage cert to be obtained. I have the birth cert of Cornelius Patrick Shine b 14/3/1854 at Stone Street Dudley. Father Daniel Shine. Mother Mary Shine formerly Kelly. (Cornelius Patrick may have been my GF) 1881 census shows a family with Sarah Kelly (Head) Daniel Shine (Sonl) Mary Shine (Daur) and 2 Shine gchildren (but not Cornelius Patrick who would have been 27 by now) living in Hall Carr Street Brightside Bierlow (Sheffield). If anyone can help I'd be most grateful of any info esp the whereabouts of Daniel and Mary between 1861 and 1881. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two more bits. During my many visits to the FRC in London, I have been recording BMD index entries for the Shine surname. I have recorded from Sept 1837 to Sept 1957(births), Dec 1955(marriages), Dec 1946(deaths). I'm happy to supply info to anyone. Does anyone know the whereabouts of a Henry Alfred Shine, b 19/4/1922 in Battersea, London, last known to be living in Lisbon, Portugal in October 1971? Regards and thanks in anticipation BRS

There was a David Armstrong(36) who sailed on a ship from Liverpool and came to Boston from the potato famine. Although there was no Carman/Carmen on board there was a Mr. Armstrong? The name of the ship was "The Chancellor". Can anyone identify these two men and say they are NOT the people for whom I am looking. Does anyone know anything about ANY Carman/Carmen Armstrong with a son named David in Ireland and/or England. Family history says they came "from the hills of Ireland, namely Cork". Does this ring true as to the terrain? It could be wrong. Is there somewhere I could check as for his spouse. I am assuming she had died by the time he immigrated to the U.S(1846-1950). If anyone know any way I could find out please help ! Dorothy (Armstrong) Snuggs dotjohn@cyberback.com

    1. [Cork] WARD surname
    2. Jim Ward
    3. Hi Listers - I'm new to this list & seeking information about the Ward surname in County Cork. If unproven family info is true, then my GG-Grandfather Patrick Ward was born there in about 1798. His parents may have been Edward Ward & Anastasia Molloy. Please see my Ward website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jimward52/ward.htm for more information. Thanks! 1. [Cork] William RENNY
    2. Leonie Last
    3. William RENNY was convicted of larceny in 1836 in Cork and transported to Australia. Would anyone be able to find out details of this man in the Cork area prior to his conviction? Any information on a birth, marriage or even a death of this person would be appreciated. We believe he was married at the time of conviction. He does not appear in any death records in Australia and we wonder whether he returned home later in life. I have searched the online LDS records but have not found a match. Thanks Leonie
