Hi, R Just reporting in. Had no trouble accessing the Martin Goode website a couple of weeks ago. And today I used the URL you sent to try it out. It worked for me. Sounds like the trouble is on your end. My computer does this to me with other subjects sometime. Have no idea why. Hello, My ancestor gave his age as 17 years when he enlisted in the15th regiment of Foot at Cork 14/11/1851. David ROCHE was born at Fermoy in 1834 (calculated) He returned to live in Cork when he was retired to pension in 1873. During his service, essentially, in India, he married Sarah and had six children. The last three are assumed born in England . I would be very thankful if some helpful person could do a look-up in the local parish register in Fermoy for his baptism records. Thanking you in advance, John jcyfra@aol.com
Maura I have read your message with interest, and agree with you re-the subject line, it is fraustrating and time wasting, to read a long message that the'Subject" gives little on what it is about. I also clicked on 'helpful hints', was particularly interested in 'Finding Female Ancestors', but notice you only relate to America!!. Are there any other hints you can give for tracing English Female Ancestors??. I have been searching for six years, explored, I think, every avenue to 'find; my gt grandmother's place of birth, She was a Mary BLANCHARD born abt 1835, married my gr grandfather James BARTLETT, in St Anne Church, Soho, Westminster, London, Eng in 1864, Mary gave birth to my grandfather in Dec 1864, still in London, in November 1865 Mary died of a blood disorder in Kings College Hospital, London. I have the marriage, and death certificates, nowhere does it give any indication of WHERE my gt grandmother came from. To add further to this mystery, Mary's husband was Kentish born, left home, I guess, to seek his fortune in London, <where the streets were paved in gold>, he was a servant when he married Mary. After her death, he took his 11 month old son down to Kent for his parents to raise. Nothing is heard of my gt grandfather, until much later, when he was living in the U.S and remarried. My gt grandfather was one month away from his 24th birthday, Gt grandmother was 28 yrs old, when they married. Have you any suggestions, on how I can search further for my Gt Grandmother?????? Any help greatly appreciated. Phyllis Steel from Aust. P.S Sorry Listers, I meant this reply to be sent to Maura only, but it appears I've made an error, please forgive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maura" <mpetzolt2@webtv.net> To: <CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 05, 2002 1:39 AM Subject: [Cork] Reminders about Subject Line > Please remember that subject line is -extremely- important in your use > of mailing lists... many people just look at the subject line to decide > whether or not they want to read the post in the first place. > > For digest users, it is very important that you -change the subject > line- from "Re: digest whatever" as that tells us nothing about your > post. > > In general, the only things that should be in caps in subject lines are > SURNAMES, first names and locations are in regular type. Please remember that subject line is -extremely- important in your use of mailing lists... many people just look at the subject line to decide whether or not they want to read the post in the first place. For digest users, it is very important that you -change the subject line- from "Re: digest whatever" as that tells us nothing about your post. In general, the only things that should be in caps in subject lines are SURNAMES, first names and locations are in regular type. And using subject lines like "help" or some general thing also isn't going to get you much help. And if the post starts out with one subject line, but for some reason changes (like to a discussion of just one surname or something) then change the subject line to reflect that (i.e. SURNAME, was whatever) We want everyone to get all the assistance they can, and your use of subject line is the first step to getting to that. If you haven't already read the "How to Write a Successful Query" on my Helpful Hints page, that might help you also. To most of us who have been doing this for a long time, we cringe whenever we read the words "Looking for information on ...." Read that section and find out why..... Martin Goode passed away in February. His watercolours of Ireland will continue to be made available by his son, who has created a web site for this purpose. Martin Goode will be missed. His watercolour of the Fermoy Bridge is posted here: http://www.totalnetnh.net/~dmurray/martin_goode.htm You can go to the family's web site to see if Martin painted a watercolour of your Irish town. >From the Martin Goode web site: "Martin was much loved by his family and friends and greatly respected throughout the art world. As the founder of Martin Goode Watercolours some 15 years ago, Martin's unique talent as a fine watercolourist and excellent business mind has ensured the continuing success of the company. Martin Goode will be hugely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The company will continue to run under the guidance of Martin's son, Vincent Goode." A few weeks ago I sent at request to the Bru Boru Centre trying to trace some Mehigan/Meehan missing links to/from Kilcoran Farm in Tubrid in southern Tipperary to my ancestors in Castletownroche, County Cork, about 20 miles away. I received a reply from Dierdre Walsh at that Centre today saying they are backlogged and that it will be at least three months before I get a response. Wanted to let you know in case any of you are waiting for replies from that centre. Oh well. I guess now is a good time to sort and organize the 1,200 e-mails Ive saved from you guys the past few months (that doesnt include those Ive trashed after one reading as not pertinent to what I was doing). Even beginning to look at them I am amazed at the wealth of family and Ireland information they contain. Please keep them coming. Thanks for your great work. Bob Meehan Dunwoody, Georgia, USA

Hewlett-Packard used to make a device they called "CapShare," a hand-held scanner that you would scan down the left side of a page then in a sliding and sweeping motion up the right side (the scan window is 4.5" wide). Software in the unit "glues" the halves together in a single text or PDF file (doesn't matter what the text or image is, it gets glued together with no discernible "line down the middle"). I have one of these things and, I'll tell ya, I wouldn't give it up for anything -- works great. They're supposed to be releasing a new model, and, based on my experience with the older one, I'd buy the new one in a New York Minute. Ain't cheap, but sure makes life easy at the library...
Can anyone tell me where in County Cork someone would breed, raise, and train horses? I have a Catherine HAYES who was banished to Boston MA because she wanted to marry Jeremiah MCCARTHY. Jeremiah was the son of the man who bred, raised and trained horses for Catherine's father. The young couple were given a dowry to start in the new world but were told never again to darken the HAYES doorway so all contact was lost with their relatives in Ireland. Joanne
