    2. DOC4JC7
    3. I am looking for information on Cornelius QUIRK born about 1827(calculated) and married Mary O'NEIL about 1845. They settled in the USA in 1855 but may have stayed in Canada for an indeterminate time before that (at least one year because my records suggest their first child Catherine was born in Canada in 1854). I know from Mary's tombstone she was from County Cork, but it did not specify where in Cork. I found a possible reference to a marriage in Ballinglannan, Kilcrumper, Cork in the above year but have not been able to confirm the names (it was for a Mary O'NEIL and a Cornelius; but I don't have any other info). I would appreciate any help anyone could provide. God Bless! Brian

The records, at the National Library are for: Baptisms: July 20, 1817 - Oct 20, 1846; Oct 25, 1846-June 12, 1876; Jun 4, 1876-Dec26, 1880 Marriages: Jul 20, 1817- Nov 14, 1863;Dec 8, 1876 - Dec 10, 1880 with 1878 missing The local church would have all of the above and up to the present. Drinagh is incorporated in the Drimoleague religious parish. Bill Fahy

    1. [Cork] Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project
    2. Maura
    3. In just over a year, the Shamrock Tombstone Transcription Project ( a Special Project of the IrelandGenWeb and WorldGenWeb which began from an idea on the SHAMROCK mailing list) has 383 entries. This project is for transcriptions of tombstones anywhere -except- Ireland which list a place of origin in Ireland. You do not have to be related to them to list them, I listed a few I literally fell over while looking for my own family. Listing any of these may help others..... and it's our intention to help others by listing as many as we can. There are many listings from Australia, and many from different US states. The database is searchable by location, surname or other keywords. So during this summer or anytime you are searching old graveyards.... and you find one that says Ireland on it... please consider jotting it down and listing it with the project. **Please note, it -must- have a place in Ireland listed or it will be taken off the board. Also, it is not for -asking- for information, those posts will also be taken down. Directions are clearly given on the info page http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/tombstones Since it's a Special Project of the IGW (in fact it was the first) I hope all IGW counties will provide a link to this project. If you have any questions, please write to me personally. 1. [Cork] Waterford (& other) Wills and Admin bonds
    2. Maura
    3. I have just finished transcribing over 100 Wills and Administration bonds (when someone dies intestate) from LDS film #0100158. These are not the originals, but ones that someone found for his family/interests and typed up and donated to the LDS - since most wills of this period were destroyed by fire, it is helpful information. Many other places are mentioned, County Wexford , Dublin, Newfoundland, London to name a few. I do not have a search engine on that site right now, but you could use the FIND feature on your browser to search for certain places or names. Even tho I have listed them alphabetically (different from the original film), each listing has other names in it, wives maiden names, daughters married names. I had to put Power on a separate page as there were so many of them! You can find these off the Waterford IGW page, http://community.webtv.net/waterfordroots/waterford - it is linked there off both the Wills and Administration explanations and the Data page. Please do not send this message to other mailing lists, but feel free to send the url and an explanation to other county lists, and IGW hosts may want to link to this site if you find data on your county there. Hope this helps someone. 1. Re: [Cork] JOHNS GROVE Cork
    2. Ann and/or Jon Nicholson
    3. Rose, I read with interest your email on the County Cork site. My GG Grandparents are John and Margret SULLIVAN O'NEIL who came to Canada from Ireland on or before 1830 and settled for a time in By-town - now the city of Ottawa. John O'NEIL was born May 1807, Drinagh Ireland - now Dreeny. The following is a quote from my Granddad John Martin O'Neil: "Extracts from a letter to John O'Neil from his sister-in-law Flora Sullivan dated Sept 11th 1850, Dreeny, Ireland (now Drinagh, County Cork). In this letter she advises them the daughter they left in Ireland when they sailed for Canada passed away six months later. She also informs them that the two daughters of John's sister Mary had gone to the USA. The name of one was Johannah O'Neil and her address was Leominister, Mass. She also mentioned a brother-in-law Corneilis Sullivan." The name Johannah O'Neil and yours of Joanna O'Neil intrigues me. Could they be the same? The dates would probably be correct. I am wondering if you have any information on the O'NEIL line. I have been looking for information on John and Margret SULLIVAN O'NEIL from Drinagh Ireland - any help would be great. I do have information forward. 1. [Cork] Could you help me with DOODY in Fermoy, please?
    2. Moira Forde
    3. Dear David, I saw your message to John on the County Cork list and remembered that you had been kind enough to help me with lots of REID family information a little while ago. I am also copying this to the lists in the hope that if you can't help, David, someone else maybe could! I have now discovered that another branch of my family are possibly from the Fermoy area, and wondered if there is any help or advice you can give me in tracking down my great grandfather, Daniel DOODY, who said he was born in Fermoy in 1843 when he joined the Royal Navy in 1863. He is named as the father of John Doody (my grandfather) on John's marriage certificate in 1915; Daniel is described as a stoker, Royal Navy (deceased). I have not yet been able to find John's birth registration, but his baptism at Cobh Cathedral in 1875 also names Daniel as his father and Hanorah McDonald (sic) as his mother. (Her name is given as Hanora McDonnell on their son Daniel's birth registration in 1880.) From his age of 57 in the 1901 census I had estimated Daniel Doody's date of birth as about 1844. In the 1901 census for Newtown, Queenstown (now Cobh), Co. Cork, the place of birth for Daniel is given as County Waterford; however, in his Royal Navy records (obtained at the Public Record Office, Kew) it is given as Fermoy, Co. Cork, and the date as 12th September 1843, his capacity on board is stoker, later leading stoker. He entered in 1863 and he signed again in 1873 for a further ten years. Since civil registration did not start until 1864 it is not possible to look for the registration of Daniel's birth. I would need to check christenings/baptisms in Fermoy; film #POS 4988 at the National Library in Dublin is a copy of Roman Catholic Baptisms in Fermoy from Sept 15, 1803 - Nov 30, 1880. Unfortunately I have been unable to get to Dublin to look! Is it possible that the enumerator for the 1901 census made a mistake and wrote Co Waterford in error; maybe he thought Fermoy was in Waterford? Equally the town of Fermoy is close to the border with Waterford and the parish of Fermoy might well include places in Co. Waterford. I wrote to the Parish Priest, Father Eugene Baker at The Presbytery, St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Fermoy, County Cork on 21 July 2001, but received the reply that "I cannot find any entry for Daniel Doody for 1843 or for the years preceding or anteceding." In the online IGI there were 8 matches for Birth/Christening for Daniel Doody between 1834 - 1854, in Ireland, but 7 were in Kerry and one in Limerick. None in Co. Waterford, or Co. Cork, though. A search of the BVRI CDs for the birth of a Daniel Doody in 1844 (+ or - 5 years) in Co. Waterford gave no results; as did a search of all counties for similar dates; there were 7 birth entries for Daniel Doody in Ireland, but all were between 1867 and 1871. In the 1901 census the family are living at Newtown Village, DED - Queenstown, Parish - Clonmel, Barony - Barrymore. In 1901 it was in Queenstown Rural No.4. Daniel Doody, Head of Family, Age 57, Pensioner, Born Co. Waterford. Norah Doody, Age 56, Wife, Housekeeper, Born Co. Cork. John Doody, Son, Age 25, Garden Labourer, Born Co. Cork. Theresa Doody, Daughter, Age 23, Seamstress, Born Co. Cork. Daniel? Doody, Son, Age 21, Painter, Born Co. Cork. Additional information from the print out: all Roman Catholic, all could read and write except for Norah who could read only; Daniel and Norah were married, but the three children were all unmarried; all spoke English but not Irish. In a booklet called 'The 150th Anniversary of Newtown From the Watering Place to Newtown' Compiled and Edited by Jimmy and Breda O'Brien, printed by Litho Press Co., Midleton, Co. Cork (published 1996), there is a copy of a list of the 1891 tenants of Newtown; Daniel Doody is shown as the tenant at number 11. Another list of tenants of Newtown during the Easter Rising of 1916 shows the tenant at Number 11 Newtown to be Mrs H. Doody. The 1911 census for Newtown shows Norah Doody as the head of household, a widow; Daniel must therefore have died after the 1901 census and before the 1911 census. I am sorry this is such a long statement, but I thought it would be helpful for you to know the sources I had already tried. I have searched your web site, and the only Doody is a Patrick Doody in the 1827 Tithes, at Clondulane. I hope that you can offer some help! I would be *SO* grateful best wishes, Moira Clevedon, Somerset > -----Original Message----- > From: David N Murray [mailto:dmurray@totalnetnh.net] > Sent: Friday, July 05, 2002 08:36 > To: CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [Cork] Look-up request > > > Hi; > > For starters - take a look at my web pages for Fermoy. 1. [Cork] County Cork William MCCARTHY
    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. Lory, You do not have enough information yet to look in Ireland. McCarthy is too common a name, and you need a birthplace. Start with whoever was alive in 1920, a very easy census to use, and search for Glenn Elwood Guille. Once you collect all the census records, vital records, city directory or land records, and church and cemetery records, you will know what country William McCarthy was born in--trust me. Irish research is incredibly difficult. US research is much easier, and all books of Irish research begin with the admonition: collect all US [or whatever country the immigrant went to] records first. Glad to answer any questions. Elizabeth KnowltonEW@Compuserve.com looking for her Wm McCarthy for 16 years Message text written by INTERNET:CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com >From: "Lory Annie" <loryg@ttc-cmc.net> To: CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cork] County Cork William MCCARTHY I'm looking for information on William McCarthy. I was told he was born in Cork County Ireland. His birth is calculated about 1880. He was either born there and emigrated to the USA or he was born in the USA. He had a son with Oralie Valentine Lebrun who was named Glenn Elwood. Glenn now has the last name of Guille because he was adopted by his stepfather. If you have any information that will assist in this search, please contact me. Thank you for your time. Lory<
