I am wondering if anyone on the list has access to copies or lists of marriage certificates from Kings Co. New York. My GGGrandfather, Richard CAVERLEY was married in Brooklyn sometime between 1860 and 1870 after his first wife had passed away. He was originally from Co. Cork. I do not know the names of Richard's parents (who I believe did not leave Ireland) but am hoping his parents names will be on the marriage certificate. I do not know the correct year of the marriage but I believe it occurred in the early part of the decade. All I know of the person he married was that her first name was Cecilia. Any suggestions or assistance would be appreciated. Russ Wood

Bill at wpfahy@gis.net writes: << You may not realize that a general query like this cannot be answered because there is no overall townland map >> Bill, That's "sort of" correct, in that there is probably no single townland map. But there are sets of them available for all counties and can be purchased from the Ordnance Survey in Phoenix Park, Dublin. The maps are called Townland Index maps and are based upon the first and/or second series of 6" maps produced in the early part of the 1800's. For County Cork, there are 17 maps, most of them in the 20x28" size range. The price for these maps quadrupled immediately after I order my sets for all of the counties, and they now cost about U.S. 7 dollars each ! And it takes "only" 169 of these beauties to cover the Republic <grin>. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

Hallo there, I am struggling with the Townland system for Cork ( or all Ireland for that matter.) Can anyone advise if a map is available which shows the townland and its immediate neighbours? I have one group of relatives who lived in one townland and another (same name) lot lived in the same parish but how far away was it? Given that some of these were only a few acres in size there must have been quite a few to make up a village or a parish. Any one able to help please? The long list of Townlands for Co Cork, for example, is not very helpful when you have defined the parish and the Poor Law Union but you can't place adjoining sites in the same village. Terry
Hi; Absent any old family letters or testimonials from octogenarians, the Search for Missing Friends is by far the best source to consult when trying to locate the places in America where your Irish ancestors and their relies settled. If you are fortunate to have ancestors who were looking for tertiary relations and friends, and sent a query to the Boston Post, this resource may be the only source of first hand information that connects your American family to their native Irish county and townland. This is great therapy for those Americans who are tearing their hair out by the roots looking for their ancestral home, and will prove even more valuable as time passes. Terry, You may not realize that a general query like this cannot be answered because there is no overall townland map. If you have specific civil parishes several people may help. I can help with West Cork if I know the civil parishes you have an interest in. Go to my website for a map of civil parishes of West Cork. www.westcork.homestead.com Bill Fahy
