I am researching Bartholomew Shanahan believed to have been born in 1851? at Bantry Bay. I would appreciate any information or suggestions that anyone might have. Regards Jim Shanahan
Hi, I'm searching for info on the Loane family that immigrated from Ireland about 1845. Specifically I'd like to find the family of William Loane who married Sarah Winnett about 1830. He was from "Cork" but was living in Killaloe when his first child was born. Family members were as follows: Samuel Richard Loane born ca. 1831 in Ireland William W. Loane born ca. 1836 in County Clare, Ireland Elizabeth "Eliza" B. Loane born 1838 in Ireland Ellen Loane born 24 January 1838 in Killaloe, Ireland Catherine Loane born ca. 1842 in Ireland Edward Loane born ca. 1845 in Ireland Sarah Loane born ca. 1847 in Toronto, Ontario John Loane born March 1847 in Toronto, Ontario Maude Mary Loane born 1849 in Ontario S. Anne Loane born 1849 in Toronto, Ontario Died 19 May 1898 in Toronto, Ontario Dave
Hi Joan, The practice was and is still very common. For instance my own Mother was a Johanna, but she was variously known as Joan, Joanie, Hanna etc.Mind you nowadays the proper given name is used in all official documents, but not so in the past. Sherry, have just seen your message to the list, and wonder if it was intended for me, if it was let me explain, I received a message presumably from yourself, addressed to me. I cannot recall the exact wording in the 'subject line', but Cork BMD was mentioned, but in the main body, it just had a lot of numbers, and nothing else, thinking an error had been made I sent it back to 'sender'. I have a Norton antivirus which checks all my incoming and outgoing mail, and also another protection for incoming mail, so seeing your message seems strange. Phyllis Steel from Qld, Aust.
Thank you very much (said sarcastically should it be necessary to say) for your unwelcome attempt to send me an e-mail with an attached file infected with the W32/BadTrans@MM virus. Luckily (or perhaps prudently) my virus scan software is up to date. Hello Phyllis I just saw your mail. This looks like Ms Jones had the cork county list or maybe even your address in her mail box. I wager that Ms Jones then was sent an email with a virus attached. She opened it, and the virus robbed her address book, duplicated itself and mailed to everyone in the address book. This is a very common problem when people unwittedly open attachments. Ms. Jones didn't MEAN to send you or anyone a bad mail. The creator of the virus did it. Ms. Jones probably has a crashed system now and cannot open any of her mails, so I thought I would send a note to you. There were other mails from people in the same situation as yourself, so I can see it was probably the fact that her address book had the cork-list address. The best thing people can do is delete any mails from Ms. Jones for now, or not open anything that looks strange. The problem comes when attachments are opened. I get probably 5 or 6 viruses in a week that I just delete. I hope this helps. Regards, Susan Jeffery Tokyo, Japan Researching Ryan, Slattery of Co. Before the posting copied below develops into a lot of misunderstanding, please take note of the following: 1) RootsWeb mail list postings are sent out in plain text (i.e., no formatting), with no attachments allowed. It is impossible for a virus to be transmitted through our lists. 2) Several of the viruses out there today have the ability to forger the sender's name to an outgoing e-mail. Therefore, just because an e-mail shows that it is from countycork-l@rootsweb.com doesn't mean that it actually is. For all listers, please learn how to look at the full (i.e., expanded) headers on an e-mail to see who the actual originator is. If an e-mail shows that it is from countycork-l@rootsweb.com, but the expanded header shows a different original sender, then it's almost certain that the other address is the infected one. 3) If you really think you have a problem like this, the best contact address is to the list administrator at countycork-admin@rootsweb.com. My apologies to the list for an off-topic post. No responses, please (unless you want to send it only to my personal address)! Let's get back to our Irish genealogy! As of to-day I am the proud owner of "Tracing Your Irish Ancestors" by John Grenham, recommended by one of our members, I believe I shall enjoy having it. It gives a list of occupations, but alas no mention of "Tailors", my Grandfather John Patrick O'CONNELL from County Cork, is listed as a "Master Tailor deceased" on my Mother's marriage certificate. Would any member know if there is a website that keeps records of this trade? Thanking you Phyllis steel from Qld, Aust.
I would be interested to hear from anyone with Callaghan (or variations) ancesters who moved to England around the time of the famine. Thanks Tim
I emailed three researchers from Dublin, listed by the National Library of Ireland, requesting a search in the Klonakilty baptism records, which start at 1809, for the surname POWER (not common in this area), up to 1825. I consider it most discourteous that after one month, not one has bothered to acknowledge my request, even if to politely decline doing the work. This is in marked contrast to the unfailing courtesy and prompt attention I've received from the staff at the National Library itself. Dr Bernard Ince England email: bernard.ince@uk.bosch.com
Maybe the problem is that Dublin researchers do not recognize Klonakilty. It should be Clonakilty. Bill Fahy
Dear Listers Is there SKS who can check the PRO indexes for a reference to a marriage. Unfortunately, I do not have an exact date but expect it to be around 1890-1893. I have no idea where the marriage took place. The couple in question are Robert Clayton H. PALMER & Elizabeth Mary SHEEHAN. It is possible that Robert was in the Army Pay Corp when he married. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Anita
Hi Michael, The 1901 Irish Census is not indexed by surname. The first step is to establish exactly where your grandfather was born. With the information you have it should be possible to get his Birth Cert from Joyce House in Dublin. Bear in mind that a birth on December 25 probably would not be registered until January 1896. I have a slot booked tomorrow at our local Family History Centre and I will check Irish Birth Index for you. Once you establish an address for Neil.W. BOYLE I can then check the 1901 Census for him. Being new to this list I am hoping that somebody will be able to give me advice on how I could find out if my grandfather Neil W. Boyle born December 25, 1895 is on the 1901 County Cork census. Many thanks! Michael Victoria, BC Canada

I am looking for the family of my great grandmother that was supposed to have come from County Cork, Ireland somewhere between 1900 and 1905. Her name was Kate or Katherine Malloy, at least one of her sisters also came over with her. Her name was Mary Agnus Malloy. The other sisters were Elizabeth, Nellie and Annie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Sherry Corder
