    1. [Cork] Looking for John & Mary in Cork
    2. Francine G. Weeks
    3. Hi! We are planning to make our first trip to Ireland and will be gone for a week beginning on September 15th. Such a short time.....so much beauty to behold! I'm trying to locate my gr-grandfather, whose birthplace was County Cork - 1824. So simple a task had his name had been Moosebreath Hoffenreffer; sadly, however, it was John Sullivan. Then, circa 1857, John married a gal named Mary (O'Connor). 2nd wife? The only clues I have are that when they emigrated to the U.S., he worked as a weaver in various cotton mills in the northeast, as did his children. Their first child, Mary E. Sullivan, was born in Kenmare circa 1858, followed by Hannah & James; therefore, my questions are: 1. In what places in Co. Cork did they employ weavers in the 1840s & 1850s? 2. Does anyone know anything about any of these Sullivan folks who emigrated to the U.S. early in the 1860s. This will probably be the last trip for my husband and me as we both have health issues. It was a 40th anniversary gift from our wonderful children, and we are just thrilled. Thank you very much for reading this and for any suggestions that you might offer. Fran Weeks

    1. [Cork] ROURKE / POWER
    2. Wayne Jesson
    3. Greetings, I am still searching the names ROURKE / POWER. I recently found out that there are also Armagh and Dublin connections to these names, but still my grandmother always said Cork was her grandparents homeland. They were James Rourke and his wife Anne Power. James was born in 1821 and Anne in 1823. They married and Richard (not sure if this was the firstborn) was born in Charlemont, Armagh. I would love to get any connections to these names. Thanks! Deborah p.s. just read a book by Ann Moore, called 'Gracelin O'Malley' - taking place in Cork in 1845. It gives a good feel for the areas of Cork in that time.

Dear List Where do I start without taking up much of your time. I have met my brick wall and banging my head against it for so many years... so leaving no stone unturned I am turning to this list for help... let me repeat that... H E L P!!! Here is what I have: Michael J. (John?) Sullivan b. Sept 1859 (Parents unknown) and I cannot locate his death certificate here in the USA. Wife: Jane Anne (Knott/Nott/Lott) Sullivan (Her father: John Lott/Knott/Nott from England) (Her mother: Brindlecomb from England and died at sea) Michael and Jane's first child born in Ireland was John ? Sullivan b. May 1882 In May 1882-Sept 1883 the three left Ireland (cannot locate ship or date of emigration) had their 2nd child in PA Sept 1883. What I would like to know is: The parents of Michael. Where/When Michael was born. Date Michael and Jane married. and if possible the real maiden name of Jane Anne. Absolutely anything is more than I have right now. Please email me Huzzi@c2i2.com this way we won't hog the list. Most appreciative, ~Huz --=======1D3F41FB=======--

    2. ****I also had a relative born in Cork as Johanna. When she got to the states she was Josephine. How do we get Josephine from Johanna? Bill O'Loughlin**** Maybe she just wanted a more American sounding name? My Husband's grandfather changed his last name from Zaferous to Jeffery. He didn't want to be labeled by his name. 1. Re: [Cork] names-Hanora and Johanna and Amy
    2. I will offer two explanations if have witnessed: 1. While most Irish followed the traditional naming convention they frequently used the middle name in day to day use. 2. Record keepers, particularly priests, at times recorded the name as they understood it should be. Often as it commonly was where the priest came from. 3. Rose, The maps are quite detailed and very helpful. If you can give me the areas you are interested in I will give you the number(s) of the map(s) you should purchase. There are 89 covering all of Ireland. About 1 1/4 inches on the map is 1 statute mile. Bill Fahy

    2. Has anyone tried the Discovery Series Maps for County Cork? I am trying to pinpoint different area's where I am finding my Supple name in Co. Cork, and it is quite confusing, without a good map. I was wondering how detailed the Discovery maps where, and if I should purchase one of these. I would appreciate anyone who has these maps to comment on how helpful they were. Any other suggestions on a type of map will also be appreciated. Thank you, Rose
