    1. [COUNTYCORK] Emigration to Queensland
    2. Dennis Ahern
    3. >From The Cork Examiner, 3 June 1879 - EMIGRATION TO QUEENSLAND.--In accordance with orders issued from the Agent-General of Emigration for Queensland to the Sub-agent at Mallow, the Free Emigration System to the far off climes of Queensland, has been closed to those persons who may wish to emigrate from the district of Mallow. Since the Government have adopted this rather unexpected measure, I am informed numerous applications to emigrate have been made to the agent at Mallow, not alone by the usual class of emigrants, but by small farmers, who, owing to the late failure of crops in the country, met with reverse of fortune, and, much to their disappointment, they found for some reason, best known to the Government, that emigration to the colonies was closed against them.--Correspondent. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Ireland Newspaper Abstracts Acton, Massachusetts | http://www.IrelandOldNews.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Around the time of the Civil War in America, the British government was on the alert for potential troublemakers arriving from abroad, particularly adherents to the Fenian cause whose aim was rebellion in Ireland. For a period of time they recorded information on passengers arrivals in Irish and English ports. I'm not sure if it was all passengers, or just males, or just males of Irish origin. Eneclann has compiled these passenger lists into a searchable CDROM. I'm not sure where the originals are, probably at the British national archives at Kew. While this database would not help you if they went back to Ireland in 1871, your question prompted me to let other list readers know about this database. 3. Anthony A few years ago I was trying to find ships passenger lists coming to England from USA around 1880/90. I spoke to someone at the records office at Kew in London and they have ships lists, but you do have to search them yourself or pay a researcher as they don't provide a search service, which means you need to have an idea of the names of ships or year of arrival unless you have plenty to spend on research as it was expensive to have searches done privately. I would think that there is a good chance that Kew would have the records you require as most of the ships going out to USA seem to have docked in England also. Unfortunately, I did not have the money to pay a researcher so I'm still no nearer finding when my family actually arrived here. 3. Hello again Janice. I am no expert on Irish research but with the actual information you have from the census you are quite lucky. I would think that with Ellen being born in Kilmeen and Catherine born in Castleventry it is possible that Daniel and Ellen were also married around there. It might be worth contacting the parish priest to see if they know if there are records for the church for that time and where they are kept. >From a Google search it looks like this would be the contact: Very Rev. 3. Hi Janice - not much help here but all the birthplaces in 1851 are prefaced by 'Cork'. It is very faint but begins beside Daniel's name. I think daughter Catherine's birthplace is Castleventry and there is a parish in Cork called Kilmeen and Castleventry. This ties in with the birthplace for Ellen being Kilmeen. Daughter Ellen's birthplace might be Rosscarbery which seems very near Castleventry, but it is pretty faint. Can't quite decipher Daniel's birthplace but looks as though it starts with Kill - others may have more luck identifying it. Could be Killnagross maybe but it's just a guess. Hope this gives you a few pointers. Cheers, Patsy - New Zealand. 1. [COUNTYCORK] Catholic Church Parish Records for Cornelius Keane
    2. Robert and Mary Durley
    3. Dear Father, I am trying to find the marriage records of Cornelius Keane and Mary O'Leary who were from Drimoleague area of Co. Cork. The parish they may have been married in maybe Drimoleague Catholic Church, or Caheragh Catholic Parish. I'm not sure of the marriage date but there first child was born in April of 1829 so a proximate year would be 1828 02 1829. They raised 8 children that I know. Daniel b-1829; Cornelius b-1832; Margaret b-1831; Hannah or Joan . She stayed in Ireland and married there. Catherine b-1830's; Mary b- 1835; Ellen b-1838 and Dennis b-1840. Dennis is my direct line. If you find either birth dates or marriage date for Cornelius and Mary O'Leary I would sure appreciate it. Thank you for any assistance in this matter, I am, Mary Kane Durley [email protected]

    3. I visited Cobh last October 2006. I found no research center. Only the museum Dennis mentioned. It may still be worth a visit as a tourist attraction. Also, see Colmans Cathedral(?) up on the hill. Very nice, very large. We walked the streets of Cobh's "downtown". Many small mom and pop type places. Also, you pass a large garden(?) / animal park(?) going into Cobh. We ran out of time but I heard it was nice. Park along the dock area. I think it was free. Out side the centre you have to get the parking disk. You may feel rushed. One of the French (?) ferry / vacation excursions ships docked just before we arrived. We had seen it enter from the other side as we were sight seeing / looking for a cemetery that may have hold departed relatives in Monkstown area. Try the Cork Library in "downtown" Cork City or the other library (Cork county?) at the Cork Institute of Technology. Parking costs "downtown" but the copies were 0.05 or 0.10(?) euro per. At CIT parking was free but copies were more .20 or 0.25 euros(?) per. My understanding of their genealogical research service is that it is limited to looking things up on John Grenham's CDROM. Not that that might not be worth doing.
