My Hooleys came from Ireland but cannot locate them there. My g/g/grandfathers name was MARTIN HOOLEY. He was a Mason by trade. No idea of his birth year or birthplace or marriage and to whom. His son THOMAS was born in Ireland in 1836 and I have found his marriage in 1857 in Swansea Wales with his fathers name on the certificate but Martin was deceased at this time. The name was written as HOOLEY. I have searched and found a Martin Hooley who was a mason by trade in Cheshire in the 1841 Census in Birkenhead and there are other names sounding like Hooley mentioned in other censuses which I am trying to investigate at the moment. Have not been able to find a Martin Hooleys death anywhere in the U.K. BDM's but will keep trying for lookups as the parish may not be transcribed as yet. I also found a Martin Hooly in the 1851 Census of St Marks, Dublin but have had no replies to my queries from there. Would appreciate hearing from you if related. 3. Hi, I'm new to the list and I'm looking for information about my ancestors from Cork. I would love to know how and when they got to Australia and whether there are any Malones still in the area. My GGG Grandfather MALONE, Francis - b. in Castletownsend. He was recorded as a bootmaker in 1864. He was married to a Mary O'DRISCOLL, probably before they left Ireland. My GG Grandfather - MALONE, Francis John - b. approximately 1832 in Castletownsend, died 1874 in Bingara, New South Wales. Married SMITH, Selina (b. New Zealand) in 1864. Francis and Selina had a daughter, Mary. He was a widower when he married Seliena - had probably been married to a Bridget STANTON and had 2 sons, Henry and another Francis. Hope someone can help. Cheers Robyn Horan Sydney

She was the daughter of Arthur Ernest WHOLEY, son of publican Robert Jarvis WHOLEY of Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire. Without going through the whole panoply, he was descended from Gervaise WHOLEY who married Mary CROSBY at Branston, Lincs on 23rd November 1797. I've not been able to trace Gervaise further back than this. However, I've recently learned that it is possible that his ancestry may lie in County Cork and that I should pursue enquiries there. 3. Hi Mary I've heard it said that Wholey *could* be a variant of Hooley but as I have so little to go on at present I'm not in a position to make a sensible comment as to a possible connection. Cheers the older of the tworobbos

    3. Hi Lorraine Could easily have been Jervois - it is shown in a number of different spellings in the Lincs records. Sometimes starting with 'G', sometimes with 'J' and all manner of different letters thereafter! However, Jervois is not among them but with pronunciations, accents, etc it could have been that but just written down differently. Cheers the older of the tworobbos

    3. There may be a clue in the way your mother's name was pronounced. I have Wholeys on my father's side. And in the area around Skibbereen, about the only place the name occurs, it is pronounced welly. My Wholeys are from parish Myross. I've also read that Wholey is not a variation of Hooley.
