    1. [COUNTYCORK] McGRATH & Others: Kingston, Ont. - B.M.D. Early Records
    2. Twenty-odd years ago, while attending a conference @ Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario ... I did some casual research at the Kingston Public Library ... which opened the door to my McGRATH FAMILY genealogy. Although none of my known family were from Kingston ... by unearthing their first child's 1829 Baptism record, I subsequently learned that James, had come over (under an alias, with 2 brothers), with the 1st Peter Robinson Settlers ... in 1823, to Huntley Township, (Ottawa area); ... Margaret Hartnett, [his wife, the eldest daughter], arrived with her family and the 2nd Peter Robinson Settlers ... in 1825, to Emily Township, (Peterborough area). They met, they married, they pioneered in Marmora, Ontario. Why was this first child's "Baptism" record in Kingston? The "Sponsor" was the clue ... Rev. W.P. MacDonald, V.G. I was informed that during the late spring, summer, early fall, Rev. MacDonald, the Vicar General for the area, (plus his predecessors and followers), would mount their horses and travel throughout the countryside and Canadian backwoods, doing yearly "clean-up" circuits ... in essence, performing marriage rites, baptising, and officially bury the dead. Upon returning to home-base, entries were made in the church records. I was informed ... at the time of the "recorded baptism" ... July 23, 1829 ... the child could have been any age - ! I was also informed that prior to the Kingston Catholic Church being built ... any earlier church records ... covering what-ever region was covered in the yearly circuits ... had been kept at "The Forts" ... [Fort Frontenac (1673) and Fort Henry (l812)] ... but those records had long since been transfered to St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal for safe keeping. [Apparently Kingston use to be considered a "Mission" outpost ... controlled by Montreal, which is why the records went back to Montreal.] I mention the above for anyone not familiar with starting the Canadian portion of their family genealogy in Ontario ... do not limit or restrict your "initial" research to just one area! Your ancestors may have started out for a specific destination ... even been allocated land in a specific area ... or expecting to meet up with other family relatives ... or whatever ... but due to a variety of unexpected circumstances in Canada's still primitive, pioneering backwoods ... life's plans often got quickly altered! ----------------------------------------------------------------- I do NOT live in Kingston! I have never lived in Kingston! I CANNOT be of further assistance in looking up any other information for you! [Possibly, by contacting the local branchs of the Ontario Genealogical Society within that region, they will be able to assist you ... or you can submit a query thru their newsletters! They have excellent web-sites!] Although I only recorded the entries which contained the name McGRATH ... [for the time frame I was initially interested in] ... it is hoped that these early Church entries ... might be of some interest to not only other McGraths, but also the numerous other family names mentioned. ------------------------------------------------------------------- [ The SPELLING in the entries ... is as recorded in the Register ] 'THE FIRST REGISTERS - ST. 1. [COUNTYCORK] Gratuity for Vicar - how much?
    2. Linda and Dominic Barbato
    3. I would like to have a marriage looked up by the Vicar at St. Finbarr's Church in Bantry and I would like to know what would be the appropriate amount of money to give him for his time? If I would like to have more than one look-up what then would be considered appropriate renumeration for each lookup? Thank you

    3. Hi John Anything is possible and I knew that asking the question was going to be a long-shot! I get really frustrated that marriage certificates only include the father's name. What about the mother?? I have no idea who William's mother was and until such time as I find that out (which, frankly, I doubt I ever will), I won't know if either of the gents you've listed is my ancestor. William and Mary Ann's (whose mother was named Sarah) first daughter was named Ellen, so I don't know if that is clue. Many thanks Jo -----Original Message----- From: john tyner [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2007 5:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [COUNTYCORK] NEWMANS believed to be from Co Cork hi jo, i have found a william newman born abt 1862 ireland and his mother was elizabeth mcmanus and father john newman. there is also another william newman born 21 nov 1865 in skull dispensary co. cork father john newman and mother mary griffin. but i am thinking he moved to canada. hope that helps john > Family history has it that my great grandfather, > William Newman, was from > somewhere in Co Cork. > > Apart from knowing that his father’s name was John > Newman (who was a general > labourer) and that he was born some time around 1863 > (+/- a few years), we > know nothing about him before his marriage to Mary > Ann Quinn on 21st May > 1887 in South Stoneham, Hampshire, UK. > > William Newman died age 57 at 24 Back Station Road, > Hebburn-on-Tyne, Co > Durham, UK. The Journals of the Cork Archaeological and Historical Society also contain transcriptions of tombstones in various County Cork cemeteries, but I've never heard it said that they only isted the interesting ones. The Mallow Field Club Journals have transcriptions of some Mallow area graveyards, but they are complete and include even stones where only a small fraction of the text is still legible. The names found in these transcriptions are indexed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlmahs/midxfrm.htm See http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/Journals/Cork.html for a partial list of contents of the Journal of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Mallow Archaeological & Historical Society Acton, Massachusetts | Mr. John Caplice, Dromore, Mallow, Co. 1. [COUNTYCORK] CORK RESEARCH - MALLOW
    2. Roy Courtney
    3. I am going to Cork on 12 July to do some research & have a holiday. I am looking for Catholic families lliving in Queenstown before 1850s. I understand that Mallow have fiches of the Cloyne registers. Is that something I can look at myself or do I have to employ a researcher at the Mallow centre, & pay a research fee? How does the system work? Penny Courtney Hampshire UK

I don't know that it has all of the detail that you are looking for, but there is a very useful, searchable version available here: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php ----- Original Message ---- From: PENNY DICKINSON <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 9:50:58 AM Subject: [COUNTYCORK] Griffith's Valuation Can anyone tell me if the Griffith's valuation including the immediate lessor, description of tenement, and acres etc. is available on line. If not, where can I get the book. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me. 3. Hi there - not a real answer to your query but there are 2 Bartholomew NAUGHTON/NORTONs in Griffiths Valuations, one in Limerick and one in Galway. There is also a Barbara NAUGHTON in Galway. There is also a Bartholomew NAUGHTEN aged 35 in Surrey in the 1841 census of the UK - no other information except born in Ireland. Sorry can't be more help. Cheers, Patsy - New Zealand.
