I went to our LDS library last week, and they have not microfilmed records for southwest County Cork. I looked up a number of parishes and districts around Skibbereen and Baltimore, but to no avail. There's nothing that's been filmed by the LDS. Perhaps Clonakilty is in the "same boat". When I went to the RC church in Clonakilty and talk to the pries last summer, he asked me to write down what I was looking for and he would check the records and have it for me the next day. I did and he did. Hello again Joan and thank you for your 'thoughts'! Most interesting . . . . Had spotted Michael in the past, but had not thought of investigating further . . . . will get on to it. As for Daniel he appears on the 1871 census along with Catherine, so am looking for his death post this date. Have applied for Catherine's death certificate and maybe with this knowledge Thornhill will be able to help with burial which may yield some interesting information (if there is a headstone!). Thanks again, I'm starting my search on Michael straight away! Best wishes, Julie
Hello Joan, Thanks for the information, I have already found them here, and also Daniel and Catherine on the 1871, Garth Street was a great 'popular' with my husband's family with all sorts of relatives living at various numbers! Jeremiah, as you say disappeared - I think maybe returned to Ireland - though there are a couple of interesting Jeremiah's pop up in Swansea and Merthyr on later census. Charles completely disappears -he could have gone anywhere, back to Ireland, England - it's just too hard! Thanks again, Julie
Hello Dave and thank you! I have tried the Mallow Centre a few years ago with no luck, but with more records available now, there is always a chance, I think at the time I didn't have the birth town of Clonakilty - to confuse matters more John O'Brien in his latter years lived in a house called 'Castlemaine' which I believe is in County Kerry! The whole family is adamant that they hail from Cork though! As you mentioned - every family has the same first names! I won't give up though! Thanks again, Julie
Another family to look at is next door to Daniel 40 in 1851. Michael Brien 3 0 , wife Johanna and children. Both named first son John(ok common name) both came to Cardiff in about same timeframe (see children 4 and 5 born Ireland) then Michael had one born 1850 Cardiff. In 1861 they still lived near each other. If Jeremiah said visitor may just be there as visitor. As for death of Daniel,o ne died Cardiff June quarter 1863 and another died 1867 age 54. If you look at the 1851 census for that area the enumerator had almost all adults in the area with an age ending in 0 or 5 using the roundup method. So ages may not be exact. Just some thoughts. I had relatives with all those names and they were from Kilworth, co. Cork, Clondulane and Fermoy co. Cork. The names are all the same so it is hard to trace them, but perhaps the Mallow Heritage Center can locate the family for you. Have a nice day. Maybe there's hope that the authorities will also 'see the light' and all those wonderful records 'locked up' in the heritage centres and elsewhere will also be more freely available.
