Her parents were Charles James Coulson from Sunderland, and Georgina Sarah Hornsby from Carlisle. Jessie moved to Manchester with her family around 1888 and she married Jim Mah Wing who may have been a seaman living in Liverpool. They had 2 children, Jim Mah Wing and Monica Mah Wing.
