Most have no interest in understanding how their surname would relate to others, while others want to see if they are related to others with the same surname or different surname. Some may not find a match, while some do. The results of my 6th-cousin prove we share a common Collson ancestor born in the 1740s. The only thing that is guaranteed is an understanding of the ancient origin of the DNA that makes you male. Even if I had no immediate haplotype match, I would understand that my Y-DNA fits a Celtic motif. Is your Y-DNA that of the Celts or Anglo-Saxons? Now is the perfect time to discover the origin of the DNA that makes you a male. Family Tree DNA has just announced a drastically reduced price of only $119 for the Y-DNA37 test (37 markers are required to have a thorough understanding of relatedness) and this price will remain ONLY until 31 December 2009. I paid over $249 for this same test a few years back. Don't pass up this opportunity to understand the genetic origin of your surname. The William Coulson I am after was born about 1815/1817. He was tried and found guilty of stealing a firearm from a dwelling house. His trial was held at Ipswich,Suffolk, England on 15 Feb 1832 and he was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Dieman's Land. On his convict record he was described as 17 years of age, 5 foot 5 inches tall with heavily tattooed arms and hands. His Hulk report was 'Good' and he was 'Single'. His Trade was as a bread and biscuit baker. I haven't been able to find his Native Place yet, but as he was tried in Ipswich I am assuming he was probably born in Suffolk. I have contacted State Archives here in Hobart, Tasmania to see if they have any record of where he was born and who his parents were. I will contact you if I get any info back from Archives. Their sisters were Doris Marjorie b 14/9/1898 d 1909, and Charlotte Merle b 6/5/1903 d Abt Jul 1980. I have just about all the decendant information on Edward Harding and Charlotte Merle. My mother (Edward Harding's daughter) was always slightly distressed that she had lost contact with her cousins from Bulawayo, so I do not not have much on your (Alfred's) side of the family. I assume that you are the same generation as me (second cousin) and that your parents are Roy Vels and Ann (GOOD?) with brother Michael. I am also stuggling to find any ancestors beyond Brian COULSON and Elizabeth HARDING, and LEATHERS and PRIESTLY. I would be happy to fill you in on our side of the family.
