I have his Rev. War pension record. He marched with his regiment from present day Chapel Hill NC to Salisbury and all the way to the Savannah River, border of GA & SC, and back, about 650 miles. An obscure record I saw (one of those internet things) listed my supposed ggggrandfather William Couch in an Orange NC regiment. He would have been in his 60's during the Rev. War. DAR says they have no record of this Wm. William, the son of Old Thomas of Enoree SC, also had a Rev. War pension record in Spartanburgh SC District. This William was born in Orange Co. NC in 1758. He was in the Battle of 96 in 1781 that was the big war scene in Mel Gibson's movie, "The Patriot." Those are the only NC two I know of, in addition to the William Coutch/Coutch/Crouch in PA & VA who family tried three times in the said surnames before his heirs were rejected. It is said this William family kept the Crouch surname, told to me by a Crouch who thought she came from his line but had no records back enough to prove it. Her ancestors were in nearby KY, Clay (?) Co. I think she said but will probably never see her again. It was a chance meeting, as it was. This William was in Sneedville/Hancock Co. TN at his death about 1834 and the pension was applied for in 1844, I believe. Thanks Dan for the reply was your relation in the 2nd NC Cont/Line? Maybe a DAR check on the varient Coutch/Crouch wil produce something?? As Ive prior noted, Ive found grants/deeds/liens listed in legal description as Crouch and also Coutch.. But was signed by the person as XXX Couch. Interesting your realtion was in the USRA and also the Militia Do you have the unit number for the Orange Co NC regiment? Thanks so much!!

    3. Edward Couch died in 1831. Congress I think established the act to give pensions to rev war vets and surviving spouses/select family members in 1836. It was not until Edward's widow, Mary Fendal Whitworth Couch, recounted to a JOP her late husband's war service in 1844 that it was granted to her. She was 88 then. MFWC is listed in the 1850 census as 96 living in the household of Nancy White (Cole), her grandaughter. All I know from her account to the JOP, Jos. Patterson, was that he was "NC line." She recalled his Col. was a Roberson.
