Checking the Cherokee Indian Census in this area found that the white men that had married Indian women and had children then goverment had declaired that this marriage was not legal and several of the white men had remarried and some had not.( This was stated on the census) West Virginia was cut off from Virginia when Virginia decided to succeed from the Union and Western part of Va did NOT and became Wva about the time of the Civil War. Many of the SC people and their Family's left SC and went back to NC when there was an Indian uprising in SC so with them moving back and foward across the state line was for their safety. Later when they had the Indians peaceful again many moved back to their SC homes and some did not. This could be why your Couch Family moved back to NC, or back to SC. When They had pushed the Indians out of Ga . Land grants were available then for settlement and loads of people from both NC and SC went to Ga.Need to check for dates of this event.
