Hi, My line of Couches comes from southern New Jersey. I have found them there until the early 1800s but then lost them. I am currently stumped with finding if John and Hannah Couch were born in New Jersey or if they came from another state (perhaps Va.) John and Hannah (perhaps nee Surtton) were living in New Jersey in the 18teens and had children Joseph, James, Isaac, George, Phebe, and maybe Frances. The NJ Federal Census was destroyed for 1800, 1810, and 1820 so I am left without a good source for the period I am researching. If any of your Couches come from NJ please contact me. Thanks, Sharon Couch Knecht ----- Original Message ----- From: <COUCH-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <COUCH-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 11:00 PM Subject: COUCH-D Digest V03 #251
I have a suggestion on other sources when census records are lost. See if the county they lived in has tax digest. It does not give much information but at least it can give you when the person was living in the county. It can also give leads to people who might be kin if they lived close to each other. In Georgia the person payed taxes in the county where they lived no matter where the land the owned was. I find the tax digest very usefull. I guess each state did taxes differently and I have not researced anything in NJ later than 1789. What if you only know that an ancestor was born in New Jersey, but don't know what county? Does anyone have any suggestions? My oldest known Couch ancestor is David Couch born about 1790 in New Jersey. He died about 1828 in Ohio. He married a woman named Martha who was also from New Jersey and died in Ohio. So, I don't know what county in New Jersey I am looking for and I don't have any known family members to look for even if I did know what county. My uncle took the dna test and we are apparently connected to the Meshack Couch line. But it would have to be through one of his brothers, James or Samuel, whom we know came to America with Meshach, but they left no trail whatsoever that anyone has found. This is my hardest brick wall of any of my lines. Any help would be appreciated. Sharon, maybe we can look for our New Jersey Couches together. Becky Griswold --- "Larry W. Hi Becky, I don't know if these records are for your David Couch, but I found them with a quick search on the internet: 1813 June Tax List, Page 8 - David Cough, Bergen County, Saddle River Township, NJ 1814 June Tax List, Page 10 - David Cough, Bergen County, Saddle River Township, NJ 1820 Census - Mill Creek, Hamilton County, Ohio, Page 162 David Couch - 3 1 0 0 1 0 1 2 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 This means: 3 males up to age 10, 1 male age 10-16, 1 male age 26-45; 1 female up to age 10, 2 females ages 10-16, 1 female age 26-45 and 1 female age 45 or over. Note: I did not find "David Couch" in 1830 census (which goes to your death date of 1828), but I didn't search on spelling variations. Hope this gives you a lead, Kathryn <snip> > What if you only know that an ancestor was born in New > Jersey, but don't know what county? I don't think in that time period there were but a few counties in NJ. At the Ga archives they have New Jersey's journals that give the county notes by county. I am not sure how many years they cover but also look in the 1820 census of NJ and see if there are still people living there with the same last name. This might help you narrow it down some. Becky, In looking at the 1830 Ohio, Franklin Co., Pleasant twp, page 55 on ancestry.com there was: Martha Couch with 2 males 5-10 years old 2 males 10-15 years old 1 male 15-20 years old 1 female 30-40 1840 Franklin Co., Pleasant Twp, p 144 I found two Couch entries Martha Couch with family memebers: 2 males 15-20 2 males 20-30 1 female 50-60 S. Couch 1 male 20-30 1 female under 5 1 female 15-20 years old. The S. Couch would fit in the age braket for the 15-20 year old on the 1830 census. Hope this helps some. Didn't have time to look further. Nancy --- Becky Griswold <beckygrizz@yahoo.com> wrote: > What if you only know that an ancestor was born in > New > Jersey, but don't know what county?
