Ashe was not a Co till 1799. http://www.martygrant.com/gen/refs/nccounty.htm If the date of death is near correct, its impossible for her to have died in Ashe Co. The records would be in Wilkes. Co which formed in 1777 from Surry. As it stands now all think the real place of death is in Ashe and therfore seek records there, of which there is none. The original source for this was : Info on death furnished by Gladys K Frazier of Perry Co Ky And Westland MI 31640 Fairchild % Carolyn Hatten, Westland MI 48185 Lives in Letcher Co {Whitesburg} in summer is Granddaughter of Rebecca Campbell and Polly Stacy JP Doward then published that. Later confirmationn is that Gladys reported it "as she heard it" At present this is a stumbling block for alot of new people, as well as oldsters. Would you be so kind to change on your website. Also later I will provide documentation and source info that John Couch of Kentucky that had land in Orange/Wilkes Co was the brother of Joseph Couch brn 1745. Both migrated from Montgomery Co Va into Nc and later John went to Ky Joseph went back to Va Thanks Hey Bill how about answering this request.
Lee We have a Steel, but we don't know what his first name was. We know he at least at one time was married to Margaret Alice Couch, but that's about all I know on them. But folks back then got married alot more than some of us probably suspected. Especially if they were widowed with small children, so whose to say. I've got a couple of cousins, and we've got a couple of aunts left that might know, I'll write them and see if we can jog a memory. :) Linda >From: Lee <longs6@yahoo.com> >Reply-To: COUCH-L@rootsweb.com >To: COUCH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [COUCH] Claxton/Couch Marriages >Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 03:59:17 -0700 (PDT) > >Do you have a Samuel Guy Steele in your backgraound? >He married Ada Winona Claxton on Mar 14, 1915 in >Sidney, ARk. My last message had a William T. Couch listed as being born 1814. I think I found him on the 1850 census I have listed at http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch/census/virginia.htm Now can anyone check the 1860 and see if he is still listed? And if so does anyone have any info on him. Bill Couch
Robert the LDS has a marriage date for Thomas Couch and Elizabeth Dunn as 14 Aug 1826 but does not have one for Thomas And Francis Dunn. Now the chart I have at http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch2/john3.htm This is not that John and Elizabeth, I think this John was born 1793 and a son of a Thomas and unknow. The Thomas and unknow also had son the abvove John 1793, Joshua 1805 ,Ellis 1810 and William T 1814 The Above John Couch descendants made it into Missouri. but I have not been able to locate a Joshua, Ellis or William T. to match up with those dates? Does anyone have a census that will match up with any of them ? We Don't have anyone from this line to take the DNA test yet either. Bill Couch Then went to Luneburg County, VA. What a > surprise! Kathryn, Thanks so much for the complete works of Couch marriages in Orange County, NC. I found some I was not aware of. Now I need your help. I want to study all the Couches who came to Lincoln County, TN in early 1800s. What guidance can you give me of where to search. I am still looking for some of the Couches who were related to us who moved there and later showed up in Madison County, AL. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Bob Couch I just got back from a Mountain trip to the Carolinas and VA with my bride, Gibbs. Rode around Hillborough in Orange County and visited Lunenburg Co, VA but no real new information. Danny, You are right. I got back home Monday evening after a week on the road. We went to Orange County and my is it a historical town. Hillsboro had many historic markers and old houses. I shall look forward to visiting the mueseum there another time. Then went to Luneburg County, VA. What a surprise! It is so tiny. Only a courthouse, a few other county government buildings a little conviencde store. I was informed there was no library there but of one existing in anothe nearby town of Victoria. Spent several hours there and saw much of what you had already sent me earlier. I do not know if you have the record of Thomas Whitworth's will (father of Mary Whitworth who married your Edward) but I copied the information down anyway should you need it. Has Thomas Whitworth's wife, and all his childrens names plus the married names of his daughters. One interesting fact was that there was a Cinthy Couch m in 1817,Thomas and Elizabeth Dunn Couch (m 1826) in Luneburg County in the early 1800s (1817-1830). Marriage records show several Couches in this family including: Eleanor, Phobee, another Thomas who married Frances Dunn in 1826. Another source listed James Couch and Rawley Couch as REV War soldiers from VA not necessarily from Luneburg Co, VA. One J. W. Couch was later in the Luneburg Light Dragoons during the Civil War. So, we did not get any real new stuff but it was great to visit and see Hillsboro, NC, Lunenburg and Couches Creek. Also found a number of Couch neighbores who later show up near the Couches in NC/SC including: Michael Waldrop who married a Couch girl, David and William Stroud. A James Meredith whose daughter Ann may have married John Couch Sr (son of Ole Thomas) was admitted to practice law in Luneburg County in 1746 the year Lunenburg became a separate county from Brunswick. All in all a great trip although I did not find any useful information. I saw one reference saying the best place to study genealogy in U. S. was probably Raleigh, NC. I did not go there but perhaps that is where we should have our next COUCH REsearch Convention. Do you have a Samuel Guy Steele in your backgraound? He married Ada Winona Claxton on Mar 14, 1915 in Sidney, ARk. This is on the James A. Claxton bunch. Let me know. My Claxton family history book is 478 pages of information with a chapter on James A. Claxton from his descendants in Mo. Well, my test went through ok, so guess I'm not unsubbed. Where is everyone -- on vacation or what? I keep hoping to see more stuff come through on the KY Couch lines. My line goes back to old John AND his wife Elizabeth. I mainly lurk - hoping to finding something new. Thanks to all. Jo G
I'm not related to that Couch/Claxton line, just came across the information while doing my own research and thought I'd send it on to you. If you'll access the link I sent you, you'll find the webmaster's addy at the top right of your screen. If the addy is still valid you can try writing them for more information, maybe they have the sources on this Mae you have questions about. :) These webmasters aren't always related to the families they post about, but some times they are. :) And if they have a few elderly folks left in their families to go to then maybe they can get them to answer a few of your questions. If the webmaster doesn't know, someone in his or her family usually can come up with a clue or two. :) Our Couch line consists of: Charles Emmett Couch b: 1891 Oregon d: 1981 Lake Elsinore, Riverside California s/Joseph & Margaret Ada Fay (Davis) Couch b: 1891 Franklin County, Illinois d: 1969 Carona, Riverside CA. d/Rev. John H. Davis and his wife, Effie (Hoskinson) Davis, Franklin County, Illinois Their children: 1. Beulah Lucille Couch (Viren)(Geyssen) She went by Lucille b: ? d: 1988 2. Robert Emmett Couch b: ? d: 2001 3. Dorothy Fay Couch (McNeal) b: 1921 d: 1995 (THIS IS OUR LINE) 4. William Arthur Couch b: ? d: 1993 5. Margaret Alice Couch (Steele) b: ? d: ? My mother in law was a McNeal and sister to Dorothy Fay's husband. There are a number of us trying to figure out our roots. :) Linda >From: Lee <longs6@yahoo.com> >Reply-To: COUCH-L@rootsweb.com >To: COUCH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [COUCH] Claxton/Couch Marriages >Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 05:12:06 -0700 (PDT) > >To--- L MO2 <lmobmo@hotmail.com> wrote: > > >Who are you? Chart at http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch/martinc.htm#rgc He came backin Group 5 and almost everyone in Group 5 can be traced back to VA. We have not found anyone in the DNA test from any of the Northern States to match up in Group 5 yet. Of cource I think we could still learn a lot's more from the DNA if we could get some of the other lines that have not been tested to find someone from their line's to take the test. We just got Edward Couch #7349 results back to day, and he was a match with the Meshack Couch line. Which is Group 3 Now on the John that is married to Elizabeth James I do not Show him to be in Buckingham Co. Va. but in North Carolina and as you say that is probably not Correct, The reason for North Carolina if he is a son of Old Thomas and was born around 1750 then his birth place would have been Orange Co. North Carolina. I have just started seeing this one listed as being a part of Old Thomas on the net in the last year. That was when I started to question both of the John's that have Claimed to be a son of old Thomas. Bill Couch Bill John very well could be the son of Thomas. But as ive noted your line goes to Buckingham.. Im finding John'/Joseph in western VA. And in the present day Charleston Wva area SO now I assume the whole John Couch of Ky birth date was prior set on thinking he was the son of Thomas?..So thence the 1750 era?? Im finding that John of Ky would more likely be born 1740ish Mind you at preaent all based on historical accounts of settled areas If so it sure would put him in total line for the Indian Wars for the full duration and might explaine that he was only in Indian War service and those records are real sketchy.. I find his know family/friends or cohorts were all Torys including Nick Combs and the Campbells This might explain why John is not listed in rev war service. He may have done service, but not as a regular OR he may have paid a slave to stand in for him, of which was common. So in conclusion your side has no known John Couch west of the montain range of VA in 1755-1766 era? which would be the old randolph Co Is this correct? If the birth date on John of Ky was set on the thinking he was son of Thomas and is not.. Then we may be able to account for him... Ive never thought he was born 1750 thoughts? I have found 6 Crouch men in the Dunmore wars. Joe , John , Jacob & Andrew all from Bedford. David & Joe from Fincastle. How utterly interesting !!! It follows the findings that indeed back up that John/Joseph got grants in VA {western ONLY} Also noted in prior email I sent. A legal description was drawn out with the Crouch speeling only to be signed by John himself as Couch And witnessed by a Campbell. I think the myth of John Couch of Kentucky being "from/born" in NC is near its closeure. Also note the Parsons WVa historic sign at their town "First settled by John Couch and brothers" No way this line ties to Thomas Couch line/Buckingham/Isle of wight In the last 3 months, there has been so much debunked on this line. And sources proven non bearing. My tak on it, is "someone" assummed all Couch clan in NC was of a varient of their line. This may be so in northern regions. All indications persist, that John Of Kentucky was in north western VA in mid 1760,s and most likely came down from PA. Although some of the later clan well may have married into other NC lines. The John you mention of Dumores war, follows the account of the party of men going down the New River , to the Kanawha, thence to the "frontier" of the Ohio. It also backs the theory of Ft Randolph The above Joe you mentioned before John, was given Land grants for his service on Montgomery Co VA, as well as John We do know the John of NC/SC/Ar fame did not have Indian War service. It should also be noted, that John/Joseph Crouch were under the command of COL. G.Washington, highly adding credance to some of the KY lore.
Edward Couch died in 1831. Congress I think established the act to give pensions to rev war vets and surviving spouses/select family members in 1836. It was not until Edward's widow, Mary Fendal Whitworth Couch, recounted to a JOP her late husband's war service in 1844 that it was granted to her. She was 88 then. MFWC is listed in the 1850 census as 96 living in the household of Nancy White (Cole), her grandaughter. All I know from her account to the JOP, Jos. Patterson, was that he was "NC line." She recalled his Col. was a Roberson.
