Hi Becky, I don't know if these records are for your David Couch, but I found them with a quick search on the internet: 1813 June Tax List, Page 8 - David Cough, Bergen County, Saddle River Township, NJ 1814 June Tax List, Page 10 - David Cough, Bergen County, Saddle River Township, NJ 1820 Census - Mill Creek, Hamilton County, Ohio, Page 162 David Couch - 3 1 0 0 1 0 1 2 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 This means: 3 males up to age 10, 1 male age 10-16, 1 male age 26-45; 1 female up to age 10, 2 females ages 10-16, 1 female age 26-45 and 1 female age 45 or over. Note: I did not find "David Couch" in 1830 census (which goes to your death date of 1828), but I didn't search on spelling variations. Hope this gives you a lead, Kathryn <snip> > What if you only know that an ancestor was born in New > Jersey, but don't know what county? I have a suggestion on other sources when census records are lost. See if the county they lived in has tax digest. It does not give much information but at least it can give you when the person was living in the county. It can also give leads to people who might be kin if they lived close to each other. In Georgia the person payed taxes in the county where they lived no matter where the land the owned was. I find the tax digest very usefull. I guess each state did taxes differently and I have not researced anything in NJ later than 1789. Bessie Mae Couch was my grandmother. She was born 28 March 1886, in Abilene, Tayler Co, Texas. Bessie had at least one brother, Claud J Couch. Claud was born 26 June 1892 in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co, Oklahoma. I believe Bessie had a second brother, Cordy Couch, born abt. 1890. I don't have any verifiable information about Cordy. I have yet to find documentation of any of the Couch siblings' whereabouts as children. Bessie's mother and stepfather are on the 1900 Garvin Co., Indian Territory, Chickasaw Nation census; but none of the Couch children are listed with them. Bessie married John Wesley Paddack Jr at her mother's home in Oklahoma on 25 July 1905. A six-year-old niece, Dora Couch, is listed with John and Bessie in the 1920 Craig Co Oklahoma census. Who was Dora's father? I do not have the date of birth of Bessie's father, John Franklin Couch. Bessie did not know where John Franklin was born, but Claud said it was Mississippi. John Franklin Couch died close to the date of Claud's birth. John Franklin is buried in an unmarked grave in the old Pauls Valley, Garvin Co, Oklahoma cemetery. Bessie died in Purcell, McClain Co, Oklahoma 23 July 1970. Claud died 16 August 1980 in Baytown, Harris Co, Texas. Margaret Paddack
What if you only know that an ancestor was born in New Jersey, but don't know what county? Does anyone have any suggestions? My oldest known Couch ancestor is David Couch born about 1790 in New Jersey. He died about 1828 in Ohio. He married a woman named Martha who was also from New Jersey and died in Ohio. So, I don't know what county in New Jersey I am looking for and I don't have any known family members to look for even if I did know what county. My uncle took the dna test and we are apparently connected to the Meshack Couch line. But it would have to be through one of his brothers, James or Samuel, whom we know came to America with Meshach, but they left no trail whatsoever that anyone has found. This is my hardest brick wall of any of my lines. Any help would be appreciated. Sharon, maybe we can look for our New Jersey Couches together. Becky Griswold --- "Larry W. My line is from Henry Couch m. Margaret Clancy, of Castlelyons, County Cork, Ireland. Immigrated to US (date unknown). Margaret and children (John, Henry, Johanna, Thomas, James, Elizabeth) are in St. Louis, MO by 1864, around which time the two daughters married (Johanna to ____Messing, and Elizabeth to John Kohler), as did Henry (to Johanna McCarty). In 1864, Margaret, John, and Henry and his wife moved to Chicago. Margaret died there. John met and married Ellen Geary in 1864, and they moved to Morris, IL, where two children were born (James and Mary). By 1871, John and Ellen moved to Kentland, Indiana, where five more children were born. John was a blacksmith. To date, I have not found a trace of Thomas. Beyond the marriage of Henry and Margaret, and the births of their children, I have not found much information in Ireland------but I'm still searching. If anyone is connected, I would love to hear from them. (John and Ellen are my direct line) Jeanne Fowler
Well, this list is just too quiet lately so how about a roll call? Would love to see some of you lurkers post your line and family mysteries. How about some from NE and NW parts of the country? If you have a family homepage url, please share. My line is Harvy Couch, b. abt 1852, Breathitt, Perry, or Lee Co. Kentucky. Last find him in Lee Co. census, 1880. Family story is he died between 1885-1890 in Owsley Co. You can find my chart at Kentucky Couch Kin site. http://swapasource.com I've added some new ones toward the end. My generation on the DNA is Larry Parr/Ruth Lee Couch/Henry J Couch/John Coleman Couch/Samuel Couch and family tradition says his father was a John Couch born in Virginia, but I have not proved this because there are too many John Couchs in SC where Samuel was born. Bill, you have the Couch Web site for this family as Thomas John Couch and I have never seen the name used in front of the name John. I have a copy of the WILL of this John Couch and I have posted it to the web site. Have you seen it and if not, I will send you a copy. The John Couch that you have listed is the son of James Couch and James is the son of John. My gggrandfather is the John Couch who married Ann Anderson and had the son Allen Howard and after Ann died he married her sister and the sister is the mother of my Orrell Gist who was born in VA, moved toKY (he was still living at home) when John moved to KY.
