Grandparents -- what a treasure. My grandfather Thornton Couch died in 1955 and grandmother died in 1987. The love between grandparents and their grandchildren and vise-versa is so very special it defies words. Ron Couch ps I've a new e-mail addy [email protected] but will also be able to receive mail at aol for several more months
I would like to have a visit with my greatgrandfather and all his family. Orrell Gist Couch was born in Buckingham County VA as was all his siblings and his father and mother moved them to KY. Orrell married in KY and along with at least two brother moved to Webster County MO after they had married and started their family in KY. Why would they pick Webster County MO? My grandmother was the first born in Webster County MO and later married there. Long before it was fashionable to educate women, Orrell sent his girl to school. The eldest girl was a school teacher. Orrell was a jack of all trade and I wonder if he ever mastered any of the trades. He taught school, he bought and sold property and dealt in supplies for the union army at one point. He was a justice of peace and I have records of some marriages he performed. However at his death he still owned some land in VA that he inherited from his father. At one point in his life, he (or so they tell me) attended a! "brush arbor meeting" and professed his religion and accepted Christ. Truth or fiction I would like to hear his story about this event. He was so much into the religious aspect at the time that he built a church on a corner acre of his land and deed the land to become the Bethel Church which has been remodeled but still stands today. Thru the years they have added electricity to the building but there is still the outdoor toilet standing. He is buried along with a son and a daughter in the church yard. (I was there a couple of years ago). Also buried with him is his life long colored nanny who refused to leave after the civil war and she was given her freedom. Her statements were: No one takes care of my baby but me and so she remained part of the family. Sure is a strange story or at least to me it is and I believe it would be worth every hour that it would take to hear that family talk about their past. I have rambled but to me it is interesting. thanks for lending your ear and heart. ellen

Hi Nancy, I'd like to have dinner with John and Rachel Couch also, and their son Alexander. Their son Alexander was my gggrandfather. I'd ask him if he and his family went to Texas with Nancy and what happened to him out there. Thanks Joyce, Just one more time, grampa always gave me a quarter for ice cream. ( I was his 1st grandchild) out of state. papaw, always called me girley, he had so many grandchilden. ( I lived out of state, ) He couldn't remember my name. Doesn't matter, just one more time Vic
Vic, I have heard "girl" or "girley" used as a term of endearment back in the mountains of Jackson Co KY. He might have called you that intentionally, because he thought you were special. Joyce
First, my German side, NO Grandma, Dave Thomas (Wendy's) did not marry into the family, He & Ralph (your 1st cuz'n) were business partners, along with Gov. Jim Rhoads. (also bussiness partners). I can also tell you, when your grandfather Schweitzer arrived with the complete family (1st class) in America ( He sold the brick factory in Stuttgard), he died year half later, Margreth married again. Gramdma, I know who has the trunk that carried all the money arcross the sea !! Grandpa, I can name your great-aunt (Kathyrn) That was pulling out her hair, as her parents & 2 younger sisters were in the wagon going to the Americas. She could not go because The much older sister ( Barbara) had sold the money from her & she (Barabara) was the 1st to get to America with husband. Kathryn, finally did make it to America. Your Grandfather Girand was not French, but German. Found his cemetary plot, couldn't read it, the stone fell over, covered in moss, went to a gas station purchesed bottled vingar & tooth brush. Yes, now it still looks good . 15 yrs later it still reads in German. LOL Second, my Colonial America Mamaw, Did you know one your grandfather's was an Indian chief "Red Bird"? (Brock) I always knew you were Indian Blood. Dark brown eyes, coal black hair, high cheek bones. And yes, I found your sister-in-law that was shot & killed, as an innocnet by stander in bloody Harlen Ky wars. Papaw. Yes you are a Boone, but not Daniel's sister. Still searching, you have many, many , many cousins still looken. Have talked to Clark's brother (Newton) granddaus. Must have been some problem there. Something abt marring across the tracks. Nice girls, good people. Found more 2 generations back on your Shoemaker side. Yep, you were right, your Williams is from Wales. Your grandson Johnny took the DNA test. MISS YOU ALL SO MUCH< Vic
Vic, This is great !! I know you miss your grandparents. They would be proud of you girl !! Joyce
Ellen, Thanks for the great idea. It's worth a try! Have a lovely holiday. Kim
Thanksgiving dinner. My grandparents, I miss them so much! Could they tell me more than what I have found on the internet, courthouses, libraries, NO I could tell them more, what they didn't know. My regret, JFK, not stepping forward to shake his hand at the tender age of 13, I was too shy.I always regretted that, till a few months ago, when it dawned on me, I did better than shake his hand, HE looked me in the eye & I looked into his! Bottom line::::Thanksgiving dinner My grandparents, I still miss them so much!! My first died when I was 29 & my last was when I was 43. Vic
I would love to have my grandparents at my dinner table for Thanksgiving. I barely knew any of them, since they all died before my 9th birthday. And what would make it even more special would be my gr grandfather, Philip Marion Allen, whom I have spent a lifetime it seems searching his family lines. The icing on the cake would be our John, Mary Boon and Elizabeth Campbell Couch, my 4th gr grandparents. I would sure like to ask those three a bunch of questions, and to let them know they are still loved and thought about. Joyce
For Thanksgiving, I would invite John and Rachel Couch, parents of Nancy Priscilla Couch Eargle, b.abt 1832, of Georgia, (my gggg Grandparents). I would ask them who their parents were and what the connection to Germany was, as they spoke German in the home! After the Civil War, Nancymoved to Texas, and sent three of her sons to Germany to medical school. They returned to Texas to practise. I would love to hear from anyone else researching this line. Thanks! Kim Gouin
Do you know where in Germany they attended Med school. Have you contacted any of the universities there. That would be an interesting research project. Why not contact the university in Heidleberg Germany and ask them for assistance. They can either help or reject and you have lost nothing. ellen
Dianne, I think I would like to spend Thanksgiving or some other time with you for you provide the most procative questions, the neatest ideas and tons of great information about our Couch kin. I took your test and I answered all questions correctly back to my great grandfather. The exception is the maiden name of my great great grandmother Milner. All the rest I knew. Thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving. Cousin Robert H. Saw this on the Cannon list, and if 'the man' doesn't mind, we can list our wishes. I would love to have dinner with my ggg grandfather William Washington Couch ca 1816, his dad, Levi ca 1791, or even his grand dad Benjamin Couch ca 1753 SC. My wish would be to know what life was like back then. How they would feel with all the inventions we have now. Why they came to Gwinnett and Coweta Counties GA. And how they would feel knowing 'we' (everyone in general) don't know that much about our families. And if they would be mad at us for watching tv or being in front of the computer all day long, instead of visiting relatives..... Happy Thanksgiving, Dianne Wood P.S. I polled about 20 people (10 male & 10 female) in a local resturant. 45% could not tell me their grandparents names, or could only remember one name. 75% could not tell me their great grandparents names. 90% could not tell me the maiden names. Lots of them said "They were dead when I was born". Or "their name was Granny, or Mimi Lastname". __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! Diane...you mentioned Elijah Couch and his exact birth dates and death dates, but you never gave me a reference for that. THE CALHOUN TIMES, MAY 16, 1912 (Calhoun, Gordon Co GA) Rev. Thomas C Couch passed from this earthly home to that not made with hands, on the morning of March 25, 1912. The end came almost without a moments warning to the family, although he had not been in good health for a number of years. He was born in Murray County GA, Dec 21 1841. He was 71 years of age, spent his life principally in the counties of Gordon and Murray, dying at his home near the place of his birth. He joined the Mount Hermon Baptist Church at the age of 16, licensed to preach 1869, and ordained 1879, by the church he joined, was sound in the faith. He pastored some churches, but his greatest gift was that of evangelism. He enlisted in the 36th GA Regiment in 1861, serving his country faithfully until 1864, when health failed him and he was honorably discharged. In 1870, he was married to Miss Selena Green. To this union were born two sons, one dying when small, the other son and wife still live to mourn the departure of their loved one. In the death of Brother Couch, the country has lost a good citizen, the wife a true and faithful husband, the son a kind an loving father. His last words to his son were: All is well with me. I will not be with you but a few moments longer. J M McBrayer. ------------------------------------------------------ Thomas was the son of James (ca 1818-1860) and Martha Osborn (ca 1815 SC) Couch. 1840 GA Jackson Co Census, Couch, James (20-30), Martha (20-30), William B (0-5). 1850 GA Murray Co Census, Couch, James 1818, Martha 1815, William B 1839, Mary A 1841, Martha E 1843, Thomas M 1845, Margaret J 1847, James M 1850. 1860 GA Murray Co Census, Rock Creek Dist, Couch, Martha 1816, William B 1839, Nancy 1842, Mary 1857, Martha E 1843, Thomas 1844, Margaret J 1848, Mathew 1850, Elizabeth 1852. 1870 GA Murray Co Census, Spring Place, Couch, Martha 1810, Mary 1844, Thomas M 1847, Mathew 1850, Margaret J 1859, Elizabeth 1852. 1880 GA Gordon Co Census, 8th Dist, James M 1851, Rebecca 1850, William 1869, James H 1874, Bartow 1878, Margaret J 1849, Martha 1815 mother. 1892 Gordon Co Tax Digest, Thomas Couch paid poll tax in the 7th Dist, 1235 MD, Petersburg Post office. 1894 Gordon Co Tax Digest, Thomas M Couch paid poll tax in the 8th Dist, 1063 MD, Buff Post office. 1920 GA Gordon Co Census, 7th Dist, Couch, Jasper F 1874, Barbra 1876, Theordo 1905, Gordon 1907, Saline 1840. Does anyone have any information on JOHN COUCH that lived in KNOX COUNTY, TN in 1830. Ancestry. com has John on the 1830 census index but does not have an image to view. The township is "Unknown township 2," page 73 if someone on the list has that census I would love to have the information contained on it. Thanks, Pattie
Hi Mary, Went to the lovely website on cemetaries and found a little info. Would love to have any additional facts on Daniel, Jr., et. al. Always glad to have touch with more family! Hi, Diane... I looked in the book on Saratoga County again and found out that a Uriah B. Couch was listed as a town official or something in Milton County. I also found him on the 1840 Census in Sciptio Hillsdale County, Michigan. He was listed as 30-40 with two youngermales and1 girl 15-20 His wife, undoubtedly was listed as 20-30 With them was a man 70-80 and a woman 60-70. I am positive this was Daniel, Jr and his second wife. IN 1850 Uriah was living inn Fayette Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. He was 46 years old and his wife was named Rachel and was 38 years old. Both were born in New York. So there is one son for you for Danial, Jr. I couldn't find them on the 1860 without going door to door. Daniel Couch, Jr. is buried in Johnson Cemetery in Scipio Township., probably with his wife who died before 1850. you can write to: Randy Kittle 10470 Watson Road in Hanover, MI. He has done the counting for the cemetery and could give you the info on both him and his second wife. They apparently had no other children in MI except. Daniel, Jr. was never used as a patriot for the DAR undoubtedly because nobody knew anything about him. I rather enjoyed this genealogy tripT....but I will tell you it wasn't exactly the easiest, but one of the most fun things I have ever done. No w back to Saratoga,Ebeneezer was a brother of old Daniel Couch. and you saw where Daniel. Jr. first wife died in 1799. In the 1810 Census he was married again and had 1 boy under 10 andone 16-25...3 girls under ten and a wife 26-44 . I imagne the ones under 10 were the second wife's and the boy 16 belonged to the first one. Does that help you with your Daniel Couch, Jr. family? There are now four boys and 3 girls, at least that we probably will know nothing about. Speaking of knowing nothing about....I have about come to the conclusion that Elijah Couch was not a son of Daniel's. I have absolutley tried everything known to man, but I can't find him. If you have any clues.....please let me know.
