Gwen History of the Couch Family The origin of the name Couch or Crouch history says comes from the cross = or crucifix which stood by the wayside. The man who lived near was = called by the sobriquet man by the crouch or cross. The monks or friars = had their cloaks embroidered by many a cross "crouched." A will left by = one who came to this country had a rustic cross engraved thereon proving = the name. Two brothers named Simon and Thomas Couch secreted themselves = on board a ship and came to America from Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire, = England. The two brothers parted, Thomas settled in the eastern part of = Connecticut near the river. His descendants are to be found there to = this day. Simon settled in Fairfield County and was made a freeman in = October 13, 1664. He married Mary, daughter of Francis Andrews, and had = three sons Thomas, Simon and Samuel. He was a tailor, and worked at his = trade. Afterward he opened an inn, and eventually became a large = landowner. He died while his sons were still young unmarried men. = Thomas was educated as well as the times and family would allow. His = brothers Simon and Samuel agreed to send him back to England to receive = his fathers inheritance which records say amounted to five million = dollars, so they must have belonged to the wealthy class of people. The = English and French were then at war. Thomas was taken prisoner at sea = and never heard of again. Samuel settled in Greens Farms about a mile = from his father's place. Schencles[?] history of Fairfield County says = Captain Samuel Couch, son of Simon 1st, purchased a large track of land = of the Aspetuck Indians, called Chicken Reservation in Redding, = Connecticut. We have a copy of a letter written by Asgill Gibbs of Ovid = [NY] in 1826 which says the date of the Chickens deed was February 1724 = or 1725, the state deed May 1724. We do not trace Samuel's descendants = further as they do not directly concern us. Simon settled near his = father's place at a place called Turkey Hill, married Abigail, daughter = of John Sturges 1st. They had a son Thomas who was born June 9, 1695, = who married Sarah, daughter of Gideon Allen December 7, 1721. They had = a son Thomas 2nd, born November 28, 1725, who married Elisabeth, = daughter of Edward Jessup February 25, 1750. They had a son Thomas 3rd = born February 12, 1751 who married Sarah, daughter of Jonathan Nash = April 2, 1772, and had seven sons and four daughters: Thomas 4th, = Jonathan, Nathan, Moses, Edward, Hezekiah and John; 2 Sarahs, Esther and = Mary. Thomas 4th married Mary, daughter of Timothy Sanford. Thomas 4th = had four sons and one daughter: Timothy, Edward, Moses, and Thomas 5th, = and Esther (Mrs. William Keeler). Thomas 4th was killed when Thomas = 5th, the youngest child, was a few weeks old. The mother afterwards = married Daniel Mallett, brother of Dimon and Levi. They had two sons = and one daughter: Aaron, Samuel and Mary, all of whom lived in = Connecticut. Jonathan Couch had one son, General Darius N. Couch living in Norwalk, = Connecticut. Hezekiah Couch had one son, Joel M. living in Catharine, = New York. Thomas 2nd and Elizabeth Jessup had one son Simon who had two sons = Edward and Jessup who moved to Ohio near 1812 [in] Meigs County. Another = branch descendant William H. Couch lives at Naugatuck, Connecticut, but = the connection is so remote that we can not claim much relationship. = Timothy and Thomas moved to Tioga County, New York and settled with = their sister Esther Keeler. Eunice = married Dimon Mallett so the three families Couch, Mallett and Frost are = pretty well mixed in their relationship although this branch of the = Couch family is no relation as I can find out to the one which Lucy = Mallett married. I just posted a new chart on the Couchgenweb page at http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch2/georgecc.htm If anyone can help out on this line pleas let us know. Especially the ones in Edward of Edgefield and Alexander B. Couch line. You need to look it over and see if you have information that can connect these lines. This family seem to connect to it some place and George and Alexander may be brothers. Hope to get a DNA on George's line soon.
