    3. Bill L. Couch ask me about the change that FTDNA did to their report. I could not answer him so I wrote to them asking about if we was compairing Aples to Aples on our results and below is the answer we got. I still don't know if they have updated the printout or not . but the chart still show the same as if I make a printout from their page. Bill Couch -- Hi there Bill - all apples and apples. After the 19 of May/2003, as stated, values were adjusted down to bring them in line not only with all of those in our database that would be tested from that point forward, but to be in line with the nomenclature of the scientific community at large on these markers as well. For comparison purposes, everything is as it should be, throughout our database. Please read below: In the interest of the standardization of allelic values across genealogical testing services, Family Tree DNA adopts the conventional nomenclature (allele repeat naming system) described in the scientific literature for each of our loci. Moreover, the testing laboratory at the University of Arizona has been actively identifying novel markers and publishing the standardized nomenclature systems. DYS464 is one of the novel markers that was put into use by Family Tree DNA several months before the publication of the nomenclature. For the past year and a half we have been scoring this locus using our initial nomenclature. During the finalization of the nomenclature for publication the complete data set showed that the initial system was one repeat too long. At this time we are not aware of any other genealogical testing services offering DYS464, so our use of the initial nomenclature has not been a source of confusion. Family Tree DNA considers DYS464 to be one of the most useful markers for genealogical reconstruction, and since we have published the necessary information for the amplification and scoring of DYS464 in the scientific literature (Redd et al. 2002), we anticipate that it may eventually be adopted by other genealogical testing services. In the interest of continuing our efforts to promote standardization in this industry, we will adjust the values for all of the alleles of DYS464 down by one allele in concordance with the published nomenclature system for this locus. We will be automatically updating the records of all of our clients. Since we have been completely consistent in our treatment of DYS464 this change will have no impact in your comparison with other clients, because all DYS464 values will be adjusted in the same fashion. 3. Jonathan Couch, the son of Ebenezer and Ann Crane Couch, was born 16 July 1736 in Redding, Fairfield, CT. He married Eunice Griffin, son of John and Sarah Nash Griffin, 15 Aug 1759 in Fairfield, CT. On 2 April 1777 he was put on a committee of 9 to take care of the families of soldiers serving our country. I have 2 children for them - Lucy who married Joseph Frost and and Eunice who married Dimon Mallette. Both of these daughters removed to Catherine, NY. I have their lines. Jonathan's brother, Ebenezer (Jr), was a Captain in the Revolution and died in Washington Co., NY. Hope this helps. 3. Bill, What do you think of asking some of the Crouch men to participate in a cross match with our Couch members?? We who descend from John of Perry Co KY, are finding the names Crouch and Couch to have been used interchangeably either by John, or about John. Who knows -- we might find some new cousins on the Crouch side of the fence. Do you think it worth a try?? Joyce

    3. Forgot to mention FTDNA now has the test out to a 37 Y marker test. But like our group 5 with 14 members in the same family Group, If we all did not extend to a 37 marker I doubt if it would do much good, But the ones with a 37/37 match has a 50/50 chance of a common ancestor in 4 generation. I would like to ask each of you to send me your opinion on this. I am willing to throw another 100 dollars away if anyone else is. Robert H. Couch said he was going to go to 25 and we have another on at the lab now who should come back matched to Group 5 and they have a 25 marker test. I had another kit ordered just before christmas and they said it would be after christmas when they send it in but I think it will also be in group 5. and it is a 25 marker test. We can see how they match up with the rest of us and see if there is any more suprises.<grin> Bill Couch. ----- Original Message ----- From: Couch, Robert H. <rcouchauburn@mindspring.com> To: <COUCH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 2:10 PM Subject: Re: [COUCH] Group5 DNA > Bill, > > I too am most proud of the information we gleaned from the DNA testing and > especially getting matched up with other Group 5 members. 3. Bill, Of interest is former President Jimmy Carter's new novel, The Hornets Next which I got for Christmas. I am just starting it but the setting after Philadelphia is Orange County, NC and its County seat Hillsborough. Although fiction President Carter describes in some detail the people, the geography, the economy and lots of Pre-revolutionary war events and sentiments. Since Ole Thomas Couch, William, James and some other Couches were there in Orange County at the time described by President Carter it is a real neat read. Carter painstakingly strives to give authentic details to the history of the period and the place. Makes me think I better know of the Couches living there in the 1750s-60s. Take a look. 3. Bill, I too am most proud of the information we gleaned from the DNA testing and especially getting matched up with other Group 5 members. I do not understand where you are getting that only 4 matched up with Ole Thomas of Virginia. I want to take upgrade to the 25 marker test but I really do not know how to do so. I looked over the data we have but could not find a link requesting another test. Please help me find this and I shall upgrade to a 25 marker test post-haste. The knowledge that you and others descending from Benjamin, Danny (William), Dr Richard Couch of Tulsa, Robert Couch and Kathryn Hopkins of TN(Joseph Elijah), Robert Couch of Birmingham (Drury), Ron Couch of Kentucky (John Couch), John Couch & Mary Prather of SC and all the other Group 5 members (even 12 count) share a common ancestor with me. It has led me to believe more than ever that one of our prime ancestors are Thomas & Elizabeth of Brunswick Co, VA (Couch's Creek). Their son, Ole Thomas, who went first to Orange County, NC, then to Spartanburg and Greenville County, SC and eventually his John Couch Sr and his sons John Jr and Thomas (who married Elvie Lynch) and wound up in Madison County, AL. This is certainly greater proof than I had a year ago and I am thrilled with the DNA data. We are not there yet but we are a bit closer than previously. To the ones in Group 5 we have 14 Couches that are in Group 5 9 of the 14 have took the 25 marker test Only 4 of those 9 match with what we thin The old Thomas in Virgina should have been. I would like to see the other 5 get raised to 25 marker and see if any of those match up with the rest of us. I would like to hear some opinion on this from some of you. Also on the lines that don't apear to connect to anyone, if we got another test even a 12 y test from another part of this family it might show something. we Acomplihed a lots last year with the DNA tese even tho some don't think so. and for a while a lots of us worked together. I know some was not happy with the results thay got back. And it seem to mess up the Genealogy some had. but in the long run it will help. We still have lots of lines that come to a dead end that have never took the dna test. even a 12 y marker would show which group they fall into. It apear we only have two or 3 main Couch lines, The othes have been started not too far back from adoption or someone raised a child and gave them a Couch name that was from another name. If everyone would work together we could get most everyone in group 5 linked together in the next couple of years. I think we all know lots more about the COUCH Family than we did this Last year. 3. Hi Diane, I have encountered conflicting information concerning Jonathan Couch and wife Eunice. One account shows Jonathan as the son of Oliver Couch (see http://web.syr.edu/~rcranger/frost.htm) with children Joseph, Eli, Lucy, Eunice, Hildah, and Mary. Another account shows Jonathan (son of Ebenezer Couch and Anna Crane) with wife Eunice and children Lucy, Hanna, Eli, Joseph, and Eunice. (see http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch/simonc.htm). Either one (or both) of these accounts is wrong or we are looking at two different families with a lot of similar names. Any thoughts? 3. I am so glad my information helped someone. That information is from the book, "The History of the Town of Catherine, Schuyler County, NY". It was compiled by Mrs. Robert Clever (Mary Louise Catlin Cleaver), published by The Tuttle Publishing Co., Rutland, VT. 1945. As a source, we found it accepted by the Sons of the Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution. She began this work while gathering material for a paper on "Pioneer Settlers of the Town of Catherine," to be read at a meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 1. [COUCH] More notes
    2. Gwen Stuart
    3. The last notes I sent were actually about Simon and Thomas Couch. These are about Simon's son Samuel and his descendants, and I didn't put the source in my notes, but will try to check if anyone needs it. I suspect these are from "The History of the Twon of Catherine, NY" as well. Sons of the Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution accept that book as a source, so I believe DAR would also - it was researched and compiled by one of their presidents. Gwen "Couch Captain Samuel Couch, of Fairfield, was one of the largest landholders in Redding at one time, and was largely instrumental in its settlement. He was, however, never a resident here. Ebenezer Couch appears here as early as 1739. His children recorded were: Daniel, Baptized July 29th, 1739. Adea, baptized September 19th, 1742. Elijah, baptized July 26th, 1747. Thesde, January 26th, 1755. The following children of John Couch and his wife Elizabeth are recorded: John, baptized March 20th, 1748. Stephen, baptized January 21st, 1753. Adria, baptized April 20th, 1755. Elizabeth, baptized July 17th, 1757. Samuel, baptized August 30th, 1758. At an early day, nearly the entire district of Couch's Hill was purchased by Mr. Simon Couch, of Fairfield, who gave his name to the district purchased. His wife was Abigail Hall, a member of a notable Fairfield family. His will, dated March 2nd, 1712-13, is still in the possession of Mr. Nash Couch, of Couch's Hill, who is a lineal descendant. In this will he gives his "Negro man Jack" and "Negro maid Jinne" to his wife, in addition to other bequests. His children mentioned in the will were: Simon, Jr. Thomas, Abigail, Hannah, Sarah, Isabel, and Deborah. Thomas was lost at sea while on a voyage to England. Simon settled on his father's estate in Redding; married January 27th, 1753, Rebecca, daughter of Captain Thomas Nash, of Fairfield. Their children, as given in the genealogy of the Nash family, were: Abigail, baptized February 10th, 1754; died young. Simon, born May 18th, 1755; settled at Green's Farms. Thomas Nash, born April 18th, 1758; settled in Redding. Rebecca, born January 31st, 1761. Abigail, baptized January 27th, 1765. Lydia, born October 20th, 1767. Deacon Simon Couch died April 25th, 1809. Thomas Couch, of Fairfield, removed to Redding prior to the Revolution, and settled on Umpawaug Hill. He married, April 2nd, 1772, Sarah, daughter of Jonathan Nash, of Fairfield. Their children were: Sarah, born August 9th, 1773; died young. Thomas, born September 23rd, 1774. Jonathan, born February 13th, 1777, who was the father of Major-General Couch, distinguished in the War of the Rebellion. Sarah, born September 18th, 1779. Nathan, born September 25th, 1781. Esther, born December 14th, 1783. Moses, born October 2nd, 1786. Edward, born March 7th, 1789. Hezekiah, born March 14th, 1791. Mary, born April 21st, 1793. John, born July 28th, 1795. Mr. Thomas Couch died in Redding in 1817. At the outbreak of the Revolution Thomas Couch enlisted in the patriot army, and was one of the band of heroes who were present with Montgomery at the siege of Quebec. He left his wife with their young children in Fairfield. When Tryon moved on that town, Mrs. Couch had what furniture and grain she could gather put into an ox cart drawn by two yoke of oxen, and started for Redding, where she owned land in her own right. She followed on horseback, carrying her two children in her arms. At the close of the war, Thomas joined his wife in Redding, where they continued to reside until death. Simon Couch, brother of Thomas, settled in Redding, on Umpawaug Hill, about the same time. He married, January 7th, 1776, Eleanor, daughter of Jonathan Nash, of Fairfield. Their children were: Elizabeth, born October 9th, 1776. Jessup, born August 3rd, 1778. Seth, born August 31st, 1780. Eleanor, born August 26th, 1782. Simon, born December 1st, 1784. Nash, born April 23rd, 1787. Priscilla, born June 27th, 1790. Edward, born July 14th, 1792. Simon A., born December 6th, 1794. Caroline, born June 23rd, 1801. Simon Couch died April 16th, 1829. Of the children, Simon and Jessup graduated at Yale College. Jessup graduated in 1802, and in 1804 removed to Chillicothe, Ohio, where he practiced law until his appointment as Judge of the Superior Court of Ohio in 1815. This office he continued to hold until his death in 1821. In the War of 1812 he was also aide-de-camp to Governor Meigs, of Ohio, and bearer of dispatches to General Hull. Simon Couch, his brother, settled at Marion, Ohio, where he practiced medicine until his death in 1826."
