A perfect 25 marker DNA test match indicates that you have a common ancstor with others in that group you match with in the past 32 generations (95% probability) and a 50% chance that you an the ones you match have a common ancestor within the past 7 generations. Every so many years there can occur a mutation indicated with a differet test score on one of the markers of your test results. If that should happen then others with who you share the mutation may be even closer to you in terms of genrerations. It is my understanding that the 37 marker further narrows down the generations in which you can find a common ancestor. To date only Bill Couch and perhaps one or two others have opted for the 37 marker test. Should all group 5 individuals take the 37 marker test then we should be able to narrow down the common ancestor even more closely. Since Bill has a Mutation on his 25 marker test then if you have that same mutation on the 25 or 37 marker test then you could see just how closely related you were to Bill Couch. I suspect we all will eventually take the 37 marker test. Until more individuals agree to shell out another $100 buck or so the 37 marker test will have limited value for comparision. Ok we got some more Dna results back today. I am not at home so I am not able to post them. But Drew Couch return came back, and he does not match anyone. I can't get to the results to see if he had any matches with any other names. He is from the old John that went to Alabama very early. We need to find another line of this family and get another test just to be sure of what is going on. Bill L. Couch results for his extended 37 marker test also came back but he don't have anyone to compair it with, He is in a different group than I am. I did compair it with my 37 but we are a way off. Robert Couch 25 marker test results came back tonight. he is also a 25/25 match with what we think the master should be. All of us in Group 5 has got to be very closley related or we would be picking up more mutation than we are. I noticed in other groups, they don't have near the same matches as we do even in what they are calling proven lines ? We still have not had any word on Drew Couch test and I think it was in before soem of these. I have noticed they have been extending the time on it about twice now. must be haveing problems with that test. Hopeful The rest of Grady Couch Test will be back soon, they both came in together on the 12 y part. Now Grady took the Mtdna + If anyone know anything about all this speak up. I have no idea of what all his numbers mean and nothing to compair them against. He is the only one that has took this test. Hi Everyone, Some of the Eastern Ky Couches I come across have VA as either their birthplace or as their parent's birthplace. Do we have any clue as to where that is? I believe I figured out that the NC birthplace refernces refer to Ashe County area. Correct me if this is wrong. The time period I'm refering to is late 1700's early 1800's.

Hi John, From what I can see, the 25 marker test would be ideal to start out with. ($169) Some begin with 12 marker ($99) and that's fine to hopefully place you in a group. The 25 marker can help pin down how far back a common ancestor might be among people you match with. It's best especially if you land in Group 5. Bill is the only one who has upgraded to the 37 marker ($229) so unless others in his group do the same, it's not worth having for now. Upgrades later do always cost a little more than if you order to begin with. This test is called "Y-DNA" for the Y-chromosome exclusive to males. The "x" you mentioned would be "mtdna" which is for maternal studies which the Couch project is not involved in. Seems those are more for people wanting to get better idea of parts of the world their maternal line comes from. There are still some in the project that would benefit from upgrade of 12 to 25. So far, best I can see is Ron is one with KY roots, also in group 5. You all correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Richard (W. KY) also in that group? Would be wonderful to see an East meets West KY come out of all this. Hi Everyone, Someone gave me a bunch of Civil War pension documents concerning John Couch (s/o Eli)on my recent trip to Leslie County. Maybe some of you have seen this one before, but I found this one interesting. It is a handwritten letter that basically supports John Couch's involvement in the Civil War. It is dated 22 Feb., 1908 and has a postmaster's seal from GAD, Ky. This is the interesting part, "...hereby certify that the family bible of Eli Couch shows that John Couch was borned January 6 - 1837, that the book is badly torn and worn..." Well, the good news is a bible existed. The bad news is that it was badly torn and worn in 1908, so probably isn't around anymore. I was going to ask around about it on the slim chance that it, or a portion of it, still exists. Maybe something to keep in the back of your minds(with all the other longshots)?
