Dianne, Thanks so much for all the research you have been doing for all us Couches. I just ran across two separate items you posted for Thomas Couch. One was for 300 acre plat Number s213019 in Vol 0014. This is dated May 5, 1767 in Craven County and a second one dated Occt 20, 1766 for 300 acres in Craven County from Vol 9, p 4. Are these two separate land grants. At one time I thought there was two but decided upon reading the Union County Map Book that there was only one land grant on the Enoree, River in SC. I believe this is my Thomas Couch but I am puzzled. Do these refer to the same land or is it two separate grants? Your opinion would be apprecaited Bob Couch ---------- >From: Dianne <couchinthesouth@yahoo.com> >To: COUCH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [COUCH] Thomas Couch May 08, 1767 -SC Craven Co Vol 14 p331 >Date: Mon, Sep 27, 2004, 9:55 AM > >www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/details.asp?index=56374&table=AllArchivalDa ta&tableLo >ok=MainIndex > >Series Number: S213019 Volume: 0014 >Page: 00331 Item: 00 > >Date: 1767/05/07 > >Description: COUCH, THOMAS, LAND GRANT FOR 300 ACRES IN CRAVEN >COUNTY. > >Names Indexed: COUCH, THOMAS// > >Locations: CRAVEN COUNTY/ > >Type: LAND GRANT/ > > > > > >__________________________________ >Do you Yahoo!? >Yahoo! Kathy the Calvin Couch that you listed is Calvin George Couch and he is the brother of my ggrandfather Orrel G. Couch. They were both born in VA but their father, John, moved to KY and that is where the boys grew up and married. Orrel G moved his family to Webster County MO and Calvin moved his family to Brenham. I can not remember the name of the church but there is an old church there in Brenham that has a "stained glass" window with his name in it. thanks for the reminder. ellen -------------- Original message from "Kathy Latshaw" : -------------- > On a recent visit in Wichita Falls TX, I had a little time to browse the > local library and genealogy department. Ellen, I wondered if that might be the same Calvin. I have no known connection with this bunch but can't resist looking up Couches when visiting other states. Makes a clearer picture on some from VA to TX on some of them. Could it be these particular Couches were poor and used water instead of milk to make gravy to "sop" their bread in ?? As I understand it "sop" is an Old English word - it is used in the King James version of the Bible in the Book of John. Jo

This will probably be real helpful by the time we make it to texas to do the census. We are just about done with alabama. It is a lots of work but I think it will be well worth it if we ever get through with it. Thanks for this info. I will see what I can do with it. This term "watersop" could refer to the occupation of the person. I do know that one of the Couch males in VA was what was called a "canoe" man. Another family owned what we would call a ferry and this was for hire for those who need to cross deep water. Just a thought on my part. good luck. ellen -------------- Original message from MR5X95@aol.com: -------------- > Does anyone know anything about the Couch's that were called "watersops"? > Why & what is a watersop? > thanks > > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. I've just added 50+ new records to the site, mostly death certificates and one military. Please take a look around and check back often. I still have a few more that need a closer look before posting. A big thank you to all who've contributed and especially to Jeri and JR for such generosity and patience while I've worked on these. Forgot to post the Census record Elijah Russell 971 42 S.C. Linna 43 Ga. William 17 Ga. Nancy 14 Ga. Franklin 12 Ga. James 10 Ga. Can anyone shead any light on the Elijah who was in Russell Co. Alabama in 1860 Born in SC. My oldest ancestor was Jacob Couch who lived in Green Co., TN. He died about 1797. His daughter, Barbara Couch married Christian Helsley. Their daughter Sybela married James Osborne. Sybela and James Osborne were my ggggrandparents. Nancy felicity9@erols.com
