I also descend from Thomas, Joseph, etc., from the Joseph Elijah and Catherine Patton Couch line. My Joseph would be a brother to your Reuben Thomas Couch, Sr. I am very interested in where you found proof that the middle name of the person you mention as "Joseph Elijah Couch, Sr." (son of Thomas Couch, Jr.) is actually "Elijah" ? Everything we have found so far for that Joseph Couch (married to Nancy "Anna" Unknown), just says "Joseph Couch", and not even a middle initial included. So, unless proved otherwise, Joseph Elijah Couch that married Catharine Patton, is really a "Senior". although records never include that, and their son, Joseph Elijah Couch, Jr. (1821-1863) that married Eliza Ann Stephens, is really the "Jr". I would appreciate your thoughts on this and confirmation on where you obtained Joseph (the elder) middle name of Elijah? Thanks very much, Kathryn Ref: http://www.couchgenweb.com/couch/josephc.htm
Hi Bob, Bedford County was officially formed in 1807 (although people were in the area before then), so if your ancestor was in Mississippi in 1809, that leaves little time for recorded evidence in Bedford County. I did look at the Land Deeds, that go back to 1807, and there are no COUCH listings until 1829 (my Joseph Couch line). About 1812, my line (Joseph Couch) came from Franklin County, GA (previously of Laurens County, SC) to Bedford County, TN. He did have an older brother, Thomas Couch, who also came to Bedford County and they married sisters - Catherine and Rhoda Patton (respectively). But, I don't suppose this was your Thomas since yours was already in MS in 1809. I have not heard of a John Couch in Bedford until we get to one of the children of Joseph and Catherine, but that would be too late for you as well. I will keep looking and if I find any info on a John or Thomas earlier than my line, I will certainly let you know. Good to hear from you again, Kathryn <snip> Kathryn, As you may recall Bill Couch thinks my Couch folks may have gone from Souch Carolina to Lincoln County, TN. I have just learned that Lincoln was formed from Bedford Coiunty, TN in 1809 the year my folks are recorded in Madison County, MS Terr. Census. Have you by chance seen any evidence of a John Couch, Sr, JR and Thomas Couch in Bedford County around 1804-1808? Any help or suggestions appreciated. Take Care. Leonard, Thanks for your reply. We obviously belong to the same group of Couches and our DNA matches with other known relatives of Joseph Couch Jr of Bedford County, TN. I was not aware that some of these Couches went to Oregon. Tell me more. Also I am interested whether or not that my ancestors John Couch Sr. (son of Thomas Couch Jr.) and his sons John Jr and Thomas Couch ever lived in Bedford County particularly during the time between 1805-1808. WebMaster Bill Couch seems to think my folks were in Lincoln County, TN which is just above Huntsville and Madison County, AL. I have evidence of their being there as early as 1808 and all three were in MS Territory Census of 1809. Do you have any evidenc that they may have been in Bedford County prior to coming into what is now Alabama? Thanks, Robert H. During my youth, all I ever heard was "they are kin". I also think I know where the cemetary is. Will try to keep up to date on more of this. I will soon be 73, God granting. There are some things that I am mixed up with according to what was told to me as a child. Still looking tho.
