Hi Folks, One of the jewels of Irish genealogical research is the Abercorn Papers held at PRONI in Belfast. They cover the lands of the Marquis of Abercorn in parts of West Tyrone and East Donegal. They include rent rolls, leases and maps of townlands with names of the landholders going back as far as the 1770s in some cases and plenty in those crucial and sparse first three decades of the 19th century. Luckily the good folks at the LDS have filmed these and made them available to the world for just the cost of postage. I have five such films at my local FHC right now and am just about to pay to have them retained there permanently. I shall give full details later. In the meantime, have a look at this link which shows some of these films held at SLC. They are catalogued by Barony. If you want to know which Barony your townland is in, use the GV at askaboutireland to check. BUT, a word of warning. For reasons well beyond my ken, some townlands that should be there are not there, such as Ballyfatten in the Barony of Strabane Lower - much to my chagrin. On the other hand, I found the entire leaseholders for the town of Strabane itself in one of the films, which I was certainly not expecting! https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/452903 Have fun!
